Meaning of "In Parish Relief"
« on: Saturday 02 August 08 05:59 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Just wondering what the correct meaning of "In Parish Relief" was please?

We have a relative in the 1901 Census she was a widow and 80 years old in Ackworth and on the census this was listed under profession or occupation.

Thanks

It means she was on the equivalent of social security (a pittance but just enough to get by on).
I.E. She qualified to be in the workhouse but (probably due to her age) was living at home rather than as an inmate.

Note parish relief was not always paid in cash and could be paid as clothes, perhaps once a year a food ration (don't always think in terms of money)
Cheers
