Thomas and Mary Haynes - Middlemore Homes, Birmingham
« on: Sunday 05 October 08 00:32 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to locate Thomas and Mary Haynes - brother and sister from Staffordshire.

Thomas was born around 1896 in Gnosall Staffordshire.
Mary was born around 1898 in Gnosall Staffordshire.

Their parents were Matthew Haynes and Lucy Handley (Beckett after 1st marriage)

Thomas and Mary were sent to Canada and arrived 23 June 1906, arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Thomas was 11/12yrs and Mary was 6yrs.

They went in connection with Middlemore Homes, Birmingham. Their final destination was to be New Brunswick. I have located their passenger records and also their names in a database to do with Middlemore Homes, but I'm trying to find out what happened to them afterwards. I've searched through the 1911 census throughout Canada, looking at the possibility that they may have been adopted or sent elsewhere. I've also been looking for marriage records. I'm stumped... I can't find anything.

From what I've been told, they must have stayed in Canada because their older brother John (b 1895) went to Canada and was in the Canadian forces during WWI. He came back to the UK but intended to go back... he never did.

If anyone has any info or ideas to help find Thomas and Mary Haynes, I'd really appreciate it.

Rach

There is a marriage of Thomas Haynes to Lillian B. Allen in 1914 in the County of Westmoreland.

Thomas was living with an Allen family in 1911, perhaps that is how he met Lillian.

Hi Karen,

Huge thanks for this all this info and especially for spotting Thomas being referred to as Harper on the 1911 census.  I'm so pleased that there seems to be information on them after arriving in Canada although it's a shame that they were separated. My mother and I discovered yesterday that they were sent away with the Middlemore Childrens Emigration Scheme. She had no idea that this happened, so it's great that I can tell her what may have happened to them. They were her great aunt and uncle.

Thanks again,

Rach    :)

I was looking to see if I could find any children also born post 1901 census in the same district as Thomas and Mary, but I couldn't find anything for either of them under Gnosall, which would have been registered in the Stafford district... The couple married in Dudley district
but I did find an IGI christening for
Lucy Catherine Haynes, May 24th 1893 to parents Mathew & Lucy Haynes in St James, Handsworth, Stafford..
This birth might then be found in the West Bromwich dist.
Births in June Q. 1891 Lucy Haynes W. Bromwich  vol. 6b  p.858
This may be her death in Wolverhampton June Q. 1894  Haynes, Lucy  age 4 vol. 6b  p.332
There is only one birth for a John in 1895 and that is in Dudley dist.
If that is Matthew's death, then in Cannock 1904?
also I don't see John in attestation?

Hi J.J,

Thanks for taking the time to look for that info.

We were confused by Johns birth date as on the attestation papers it's down as 7th April 1892, on his death certficate it 7th April 1893 and working it out from his marriage certificate it's 1895 which matches the census ... which must be the right one for the family as all of the names match up from the information provided by family and relatives.

The address in Stafford on Johns Attestation papers match up with a passenger list record for his brother, Matthew who went to Australia for 1924.

Johns mothers name on the Assestation Papers was confusing but it looks as though she re-married, which would be the record which you have found and although she was called Lucy maybe Catherline/Catherine was in her name to. Johns father, Matthew Haynes, died in 1905.

I think Lucy may have had another daughter called Beatrice but I'm not sure who the father was.

As for Thomas and Mary in Canada, I checked the marriage info for Thomas Haynes to Lillian B. Allen in 1914, Westmoreland and don't think it's the right person as his mother and fathers names are different and don't relate to anything.

Can't wait until the 1911 census is released as it should confirm a few things and hopefully fill in the gaps.
