John HASTINGS born Holywood Dumfries - 2006 update

Hi Rootschatters

Just dipping my toe into Scottish research for the first time!  Would like to find the birthplace and any other info on John HASTINGS.

Believed to have been born at Lincluden Mill, Dumfries but little else to go on.  He married Jane BUCHANAN 11 May 1850 at Cardross, Dunbarton where he was apprenticed to her father, a miller.  Hence assuming his birthdate will be pre-1830.

Where do I start, please?  I don't know which resources are available free online and which I should consider paying for?  I have later info on him and most of Jane's family already.

STOP PRESS:

Took the plunge and used Scotlandspeople.  Found what I believe to be John's birth, to John and Elizabeth (nee McMillan) 12 Feb 1824.

Can anyone help with their marriage??  Unable to find it on the same source.  Would also be interested if early censuses exist of this family.

Just to add that after a break in researching this side of my family, I have now located John in 1841 and 1851.

John HASTINGS son of John and Elizabeth (believed to be MACMILLAN).  Both Johns were millers.  John jr was born in Holywood, but several of his siblings were born in Irongray and twins in Troqueer.

John married Jane BUCHANAN in Cardross - no idea now why he went there!  Family story was that he was apprenticed to her father, but he turns out to have been a shoemaker!

Any family connections - please let me know!
