GAYNOR FAMILY somewhere in Ireland?
« on: Tuesday 22 December 09 04:51 GMT (UK) »
Trying to locate a Patrick Gaynor married a Marcella somewhere in Ireland about 1820-ish as their son Matthew was born 1820 again somewhere in Ireland.
Sorry for being so vague but its the only information  I have on this family & its come from the UK census records.
The family moved to the UK worked & died there.
Any help is appreciated as this is my first attempt at researching Ireland. I've tried the links supplied in the resources sections without luck

Hello Annie,
I can see Patrick and Marcella in Portsea in 1871 but Patrick's year of birth is 1821 so they couldn't have a son born 1820  :-\

How do you know that they are Matthew's parents?

If it's the same Matthew (Clara's father) I can't see him before 1881 census - yet he married in 1869 I think  :-\

Found Matthew as Mathew Gayner in 1871 but still says Ireland as p o b  ::)

I've got the marriage certificate & his father is definately Patrick Gaynor - Patrick is a Watchman & Mary Larkin nee Humphreys ( Matthews bride) father Thomas is a "smith", Matthew is aged 24 & a bachelor, Mary is 25 & a widow.
Matthews occupation is listed as a "baker".
The 1871 is the same family but for some reason Mary put her name in as Marcy & spelt Gaynor as "Gayner". Marys son took the Gaynor name.

Yes I saw marriage on Lancashire BMD for Matthew and Mary Larkin- she has been entered as alternative name of 'Smith' so that must have been confusion.
Patrick and Marcella though don't seem to be the parents re the age.
 - the couple in 1871 census are in Portsea Hampshire:
Patrick 52 yrs labourer in Dock Yard
Marcella 50 yrs

Matthew is born 1845 -26 yrs which therefore is possible re the ages (You had said that Matthew was born 1820 in your original post)

1891 Patrick is listed as 'married' and is an inmate in Nazareth House, Portsea.
Marcella doesn't die until 1893 and there is an Anne Gaynor in Nazareth House also married so you would assume that it is perhaps Marcella.

I can't see either Patrick, Marcella or matthew before 1871 so they perhaps only came over 1861-1871.
Mary Larkin was in Durham when William H was born and in Manchester in 1869 for marriage. Its' difficult with all the places being so far apart to particularly connect Matthew with that Patrick and Marcella- unless you know his mother was definitely her.

I just found Patrick and Marcella in 1881 as Gaymon - he is born Westmeath and she is born Carlow. He is a farm labourer.

Here is a link to Griffiths Valuation- the site explains what it is.

There are quite a lot of Patrick Gaynors there. Have a look and see what you think.

Lastly, is Matthew alive in 1911? Wonder if it gives his county of birth on that census.

best wishes
heywood

I have seen the tree on Anc. and the marriage certificate which gives you Patrick as father but I would urge caution at this time with linking him to Patrick and Marcella - there doesn't seem to be any documentation to prove it on the tree.
I apologise for being a bit negative but just want it to be right for you.
