Many thanks Biggles, the dates came about from a medical discharge certificate for my 2XGGF who was discharged from the 84th in 1811 with asthma and bad eyesight. In view of what you say about the fevers I would guess he was pleased to go. Now a more difficult one, I realise it is outside of the parameters you quote and if you cannot help I understand, but do you know which regiments were stationed at York and possibly other military establishments in the vicinity of York during 1776 please?
Ayres Brignell Cornwell Harvey Shipp  Stimpson Stubbings (all Cambs) Baumber Baxter Burton Ethards Proctor Stanton (all Lincs) Luffman (all counties)

The 10th (North Lincoln) Regiment of foot was in Egypt between 1799-1801, but took no part in any of the engagements against the French

The 10th Foot took enough part to have Eygpt as a battle honour and be awarded the Egypt clasp to the Military General Service medal. They may have not have faced the French directly in battle, but their presence along with the rest of the Red Sea force played a part in the final victory.

Double checked my information  and def not listed in the order of battle for  for the following clashes

Aboukir British clash with the French 8th March 1801
Lake Mareotis  clash with the French 13th March 1801
Alexandria       battle with the French 21st March 1801
(not even listed as been in reserves)
Cairo Capitulation 27th June 1801
Alexandria  Siege and Capitulation 17 August - 2nd September 1801

They could of served as a detachment of Marines but not to sure. But def listed as been there in there regimental history.

Biggles,

The 10th (North Lincolnshire) Regiment are listed for the honour EGYPT having served in the campaign between 8th March - 26th August 1801.  The regiment's badge was the Sphinx subscribed EGYPT.

On another point relating to your comment regarding the 21st Light Dragoons, the 4th Kaffir War is now know as the 4th Cape Frontier War in polite circles, for obvious reasons.

I suspect Biggles is quoting from quite an old source, ... and, like me, wasn't aware of the ramifications of that earlier title until some research was done.
