James Tosh/ Catherine Mennie

My gggrandmother was named Catherine Mennie; she was born in 1833, Chapel of Garioch, and had a child out of wedlock, with William Smith, born in Premnay in 1826. This child was my  ggrandmother, Jane Smith, who married James Florence. Catherine later married James Tosh, in 1862 in Aberdeen, and had 6 children with James: Mary Ann, b. 1864; Lewis, b. 1868; Williamina, b. 1866; Charlotte Smith, b. 1872; James, b. 1870, and William, b. 1863, all in St. Nicholas, Aberdeen. I have not been able to find Catherine’s death record. I would be interested in sharing information with any descendants of the Tosh family.

There is an entry on SP for the death of a Catharine Tosh, other name Mennie,  in St Nicholas, Aberdeen in 1876. Aged 43.

This looks like her.

margaret may have married before to a smith and her maiden name maybe
paterson but i've nothing to back this up

If Margaret died in 1891, Old Machar, then she has three other surnames - Paterson, Wilson and Smith

Many thanks for this information. Hopefully you can help me with one problem. I have previously checked SP for Catherine's death & couldn't find it, using both Mennie/ Tosh and Tosh / Mennie combinations, then Mennie alone. Gadget, please advise. Thanks. Jim Main

Hi Jim

I put in Tosh as surname - no soundex. Then just  Cath (Note that she is down as Catharine). Years - from 1872 onwards.  Birth 1833 +/- 3.  Aberdeen.

Two came up, one with other name Mennie

SP has three marriages in 1878 old machar aberdeen for a james tosh to
a margaret
smith , paterson , and wilson show as brides surname so i think these
marriages are one and the same

                Jane Wilson, domestic servant, deceased
