According to a Wikipedia.org article,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mile_End , the 1st time the place name was recorded, in 1288 no less, as La Mile Ende, its meaning was "the hamlet a mile away" from Aldergate in the City of London. Apparently, it became one of the first suburbs of the City of London, becoming incorporated into the city in 1855. It is the East End of London, now, for anyone who wishes to find the area on a map.
