Hi,

I think this is your Richard Burns: http://www.maxwellancestry.com/census/51transcript.aspx?houseid=76804068

If so he was in prison (see the note on the right hand side of the transcription), this may sound like bad news but actually the record gives a place of birth in Ireland which I thought may help your research.

If this is the right Richard Burns the prison index gives Richards birthplace as Cavan.

Hope this helps your research,

Emma

Hi,

Yes don’t worry it wasn’t murder!! The index says “Theft of a Pair of Shoes”. The full entry will say more, age, height, eye colour, behaviour, length of sentence etc.

I think these are a great resource for Irish ancestors because getting a place in Ireland is very rare. I have some real dead ends in my family tree because I just don’t know where in Ireland they are from. It’s also very interesting to learn what colour of eyes your ancestors had.

Emma

P.S. I wrote more about the prison records on my blog a few weeks ago: http://scottishgenealogyblog.blogspot.com/2010/03/jedburgh-prison-indexing-under-way.html

This is actually a service we usually provide through our website in an effort to provide more colour to family trees and also as in your case add more information. It is amazing how often somebody from Ireland has precise place of birth in the prison register. I’m glad we have been able to help and I hope this helps you research back into your Irish history.
