What is a maltster?
« on: Saturday 08 January 11 12:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi all!
I was very kindly sent some info on the Durham roots chat page this week from some very kind roots chatters who looked up my gggg Grandparents on the 1871 census in Durham
George and Ann Brown he is discribed as a maltster am i right in thinking this is to do with the making of Alcohol? Also was it a poor mans trade or would he of been quite well off?
Any help very much appreciated

A maltster prepares the malt that is used in the later process of brewing.  He may not actually be a brewer himself, but supplied the product to brewers.

So I suppose by 1871 he may have worked for a brewery and was one of the employees.

Hi,

This is a useful site. Not always very comprehensive but it is a good starting point for descriptions of old occupations.
