Aneurin Rees, Maesteg to Australia to Maesteg
« on: Saturday 04 May 13 11:29 BST (UK) »
Aneurin Rees died in July 1927 aged 32. He had emigrated to Australia. because of ill health. His condition improved. He sadly returned to Wales where his condition worsened and he died.
My question is where can I get information on his migration and his passage to Australia. ?

Hi,
Is this him?

Philadelphia passenger list

Aneurin Rees, birthplace  Maesteg , Wales, born abt 1895
occupation is a miner
His father  is Evan Rees and lived  at 16 queen st Maesteg in 1919 (this is his relatives details he gave them, he's not travelling with him)
Departure, Liverpool, England ,
Arrival,  9 Nov 1919, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Ship Name: Haverford

They have "in transit" stamped on his entry His Final destination is marked Bethlehem

The record can be found on ancestry

I notice you have a tree on ancestry and have only made ref to a 1901 census for him ,  Have you found him in 1911 ? If not he's  mistranscribed as Anewrin

Kind regards

Thanks Cell,
The answer is yes, all those details add up but the newspaper article when he died said he went to Australia . Bethlehem I take it is the steel and coal town in Pennsylvannia.

I really appreciate your help.

Thanks again

Regards

Mike

Hi,
He may have travelled onwards to Aus after he visited his cousin in Bethlehem.
You may be better off posting a message in the Australian forum part of this site  as there are plenty of people in there more familiar with Aus records . I'm not too familiar with the immigrant records here in Aus even though I'm an immigrant here myself  ;D as I'm the first one in my lines out here.

Kind Regards

Hi Superstar, quite a few people from Maesteg emigrated to America (Pennsylvania inparticular) during this period - my family included.

Curious thing about visiting his cousin in the US of A - this is what my gt gt uncle had put down. A sister of this "cousin" still lives in Maesteg, and as far as my grandparents knew, they were not related. When I spoke to this woman, it turns out we were not related, but that people used to put down that they were visiting their cousin (i.e. someone already living in America) as it was easier to gain admittance to the country. Most of these people were simply looking to work in the blossoming coal industry over there.

The whole Australia thing could be a red herring - come across enough of this myself in the past

A problem with the red herring is that when he died in 1927 the obituary in The Glamorgan Gazette
15th July 1927.
He emigrated to Australia because of ill health, His health improved but on his return itbecame worse and he died.
Also the embarcation paper for the port of Philadelphia has him as being "In Transit ".

Now maybe he did or maybe he didn't travel to Australia but why did his father go to such lengths 8 years later ?
Regards
Mike

Hi again,
I think I've just just found him in the  UK incoming passenger list.

He arrives back on the 10 May 1926, ships name  is Scythia ( White Star Dominion Line),
 Port of departure  New York
He gives his proposed address as  8 Claremont ave Maesteg
Country of last Permanent residence USA
his given age 31 (abt 1895) , occupation  labourer

It is a bit of a puzzle the Australian bit to the story.
If you're looking on ancestry for the record  he's mistranscribed by them as Aneurin Rass ::) ( the image does  say Rees)

You'd think he would be in the  US 1920 census wouldn't you if he did stay in the country for all those years?- But I can't seem to find anything yet. Maybe he's not there , or perhaps he is mistranscribed again. I'll have another look later when I have more time

Hope that helps
Kind regards

Thanks for your help. It is much appreciated.  The address is 16 Queen Street and it is there what appears to have happened is the print has jumped a line. His father was very religious and I doubt if he would have put a false obituary on the paper .well not knowingly.  What we have so far is the start and end of the journey.  I have tp wonder if he crossed the US and sailed from there and back. Or he never went at all? I just want to say thanks again
 Regards Mike

There's always the simple explanation that the newspaper simply mistranscribed the obituary, putting Australia instead of America? Stranger things have happened!
