Turnbull/Scott/Robert the Bruce
« on: Thursday 29 July 04 15:50 UTC (UK) »

my ggggggg - grandfather James Turnbull came to Argyllshire app. 1620 - served in Cromwell's army in Ireland attaining rank of Colonel - awarded lands in Co. Longford - name was corrupted to Trimble in Ireland.
Family traditional story says that the first Turnbull was John Scott of Brackenridge of the court of Robert the Bruce - out fishing with the King one day, a wild bull ran at the King - Scott threw himself between King and bull - caught a horn with one hand and the animal's throat with the other and choked him. Bruce said his preservers name shold no longer be Scott but Turnbull.
I have my family tree from 1620 but any information about turnbulls or Scotts before that would be welcome

I have Scotts and Carruthers in the Gretna, Dornock, & Annan regions - an area closely associated with Robert the Bruce.

I'm certainly not as far back as you!  I wish but I'm getting through the many John Scotts I'm in the 18th century now.  So if I ever break the 17th century I'll be in touch!!

Pam

Hi trimlaug,

I was in Dornock Cemetery yesterday having a look for my Scotts and just as I was leaving I saw 2 small graves (I'd run out of film sorry Sad need digital camera!).  They had a coat of arms on the back or one of them - it was very worn but it could have easily been the three boar heads.

I wrote down what was on the back of the other but the fronts are quite worn.  However, there is a book in Edinburgh library which has all the the pre-1855 so I'll get the rest of the script from there.

Presumably as you know your ancestor went to Argyllshire this would be a collateral line?

Grave 1
Here lyes Jannet Turnbull daughter of Robert Turnbull in Closehead who died May 30th 1775 age 11 months and John Turnbull son of said Robert who died 11th November 1784 age 8 years.  Also Mary Turnbull died 28th January 1784 age 1 year 6 months.

Here lyes Thomas son to John Turnbull in Langlands who died young.

Grave 2
John Turnbull in Langlands who died 5th October 1792 age 78 years
To the memory of Jannet Frood his spouse 21st September 1770 age 58 years....

lost it after this will check transcription at library...

Hope these help,

Pam
