OWEN and GRIFFITHS families NEWTOWN
« on: Wednesday 26 February 14 21:44 GMT (UK) »
Hello

Am looking for any information on the above families. My g grandparents were Richard Owen born 1868 Penstrouded and Margaret Griffiths born 1864 Caersws. Richards father was Charles Owen a farmer born around 1822 and from the 1881 census seem to be quite a large family.

Haven't been able to find out much about the Griffiths. Margaret's father was John Griffiths an Ostler

Powys is the registration district for Caersws , that you need to select on the freebmduk site for births deaths and marriage certificate references.

I would suggest you read the following> https://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/Wales,_Powys_Church_of_Wales_Parish_Records_(FamilySearch_Historical_Records)

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/MGY/Llanwnnog/

and I tried numerous times on Penstrouded spelling and ask you check the spelling of that...

Your best options for research in this area are census then do certificate referencing, purchase of certificates.....   and use of county archives for probate and land documentation.

I would also suggest that you look at the resources boards and posts of rootschat, for the areas that you seek for other links, as well as use the search engine of rootschat entering place names to see what other folk are researching in those areas to give you an indicator of problems faced researching there.    Since the surnames you need are popular in the region , you may have to do some timeline or chronological databasing to get extended families of siblngs etc

The microfilm scopes for those areas are limited.   You will find limited materials from the old International Genealogical Index on familysearch.org

good luck

Think it's this one:

Genuki has it as both - PENYSTRYWAID / PENSTROWED

Apologies for not welcoming you before - but a warm welcome now  :)

Given the ages of the children on the 1881, a strong possible for Charles Owen and wife Elizabeth's marriage would be

Dec quarter, 1856, Newtown, vol 11b, page 433
Charles Owen and an Elizabeth Jones are on he same page.

Have you got Charles on the earlier  censuses?

From the 1881 census, Charles was born Mochdre circa 1829 - so this might well be his baptism:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/KC12-99F

Full details of this are on FindmyPast but because of the Terms and Conditions, we're not allowed to give any information  :-\

Often  families used 'family' names - my Montgomeryshire ones  did - and frequently the first son was named for the man's father.

The Clue to Charles Owen is on the 1871 census and the earlier ones (1841-61):

Cefnhir, Penstrowed
RG10/5613/55/4
John Beaumont, unm, 76, Farmer of 168 acres, b. Moughtry (Mochdre)
Charles Owen, nephew, 42, farmer's son, b. do
Elizabeth Owen, 35, nephew's wife, b. do
(and their 8 children)

so, was Charles's mother a Beaumont?

gadget....   think both places are needed for each side of the family......

this research will have to be deadly accurate though  given what I was seeing of the surnames of both .........
