Birth Records for Cape Breton
« on: Wednesday 11 June 14 15:01 BST (UK) »
I'm not familiar with research in Canada and I need a bit of help.

If I was looking for birth records for Cape Breton between 1905 and 1909 where would I look?

The area would most probably be Inverness, Cape Breton.

Thank you:)

You can also look at the 1901 and 1911 censuses for free at automatedgenealogy.com and I believe the 1921 census is supposed to be available for free through Ancestry.

Thanks Cosmac. I'll take a look.

Thanks for the idea Polarbear. Unfortunately this was a family that emigrated to Canada in 1905 and were back in Glasgow Scotland by 1911. They are in the census there where it states that two of their children were born in Canada. I have found them on an outgoing passenger list with a destination of Inverness, C.B. Their oldest child always told her family that she was born in Canada but in fact she was born in Glasgow and went to Canada when she was 8 months old.

It would be nice to find the births of her two siblings :)

Hi,

The Nova Scotia Genealogy site is a good place to start, but you should be aware that, in Nova Scotia, the law requiring the registration of births and deaths was not enforced for a period of around 30 years. There are very few birth and death records for the province for the years 1877-1908. The registrations began again late in 1908. Not sure of the exact date, but I think it was around October, or maybe a little earlier. Their church may have baptism records, but you need to know which one it was.
