Richard Jenkins and Martha Cook and Pontypool Workhouse
« on: Tuesday 19 November 13 22:09 GMT (UK) »
Any help on the family of Richard Jenkins ? 1850 who married Martha Cook ? 1872  three childrenn Eliza 1874, John Joseph 1876 (my husband's grandfather) and Sarah 1880.  Martha recorded as widow each time she goes into the workhouse.  I have a possible link to Thomas and Sarah Jenkins living in Newland, Glouncestershire where he ? met his wife Martha daughter of Christopher and Ann Cook who then moved also to Pontypool.  I cannot find births, marriage certificate or deaths of Richard and Martha.  May be going down a total dead end.

There's this possible marriage - would suggest a typo somewhere along the way

Yes that is all I can find too but they have the banns read in LLanfihangel LLantarnam which makes no sense and he seems the wrong age - Martha does appear as Cook on the birth certificate of Eliza and John joseph.  But the banns were mistranscibed in one site as Brook so who knows.  I can't get past Christopher Cook other than a possible John and Mary as his parents.  Thanks for helping - any suggesitons gratefully received!!

Yes - Sarah dies later in 1881 and the family stay in the workhouse until 1883.  I think Christopher Cook dies that year = maybe connection with leaving the workshouse. She had previous daughter Mary A who lived with her grandparents and in the 1891 (I think) Census Martha seems to be living with Mary and her husband Carey Turbeville
