Daniel O'Neill
« on: Monday 08 September 14 16:07 BST (UK) »
My Great Great grandparents were Maurice O'Neill and Elizabeth Burke born early 1800s in Carlow,Ireland .
I have not been able to find their marriage around the 1830s'
The earliest record i can find connected to them is the birth of my great grandfather Matthew O'Neill in Carlow in 1839 and further births in the 1840s in Dublin around the time of the great famine.
I have no idea how many children they had.
I recently found this following death in Warsaw,Rice Minnesota.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FDSQ-SFK

I was wondering if this man could possibly be another son and would anyone be able to find any information on his earlier life.
I know its a long shot but i have no idea of researching U S genealogy.
I would be very greatful for any assistance in trying to find if he is related or not.

Thank you in anticipation.

This person has some good info on Daniel O'neil and may be able to help you:

http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.oneil/684/mb.ashx
O'Neil family of Rice County Minnesota

http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carney/1701/mb.ashx
Bridget CARNEY and Daniel O'NEIL in RICE COUNTY, Minnesota

You can register for free on Ancestry.com to post your query as a reply to either message, and that person would be automatically notified of your post.

Based on the given info, I found an Illinois marriage record here:

This link gives info on how to obtain a copy of the marriage certificate:

The 1860 census was the first after they married.  It looks like Daniel may have had a younger brother Michael living with them.

You might try to contact the James Mathewson mentioned to see if he has any info on Daniel O'neil, or could advise you in your search.  Contact him, maybe, through someone at the newspaper:

I had trouble yesterday finding a census for Daniel later than 1880; 1900 & 1910 listed an immigration year.  I found the following today.  Unfortunately, it gives 1870 as the immigration year for both Daniel and Bridget.  This is clearly wrong, as their marriage year was 1856, in the state of Illinois.

1910 United States Federal Census about Dan O Neill
Name:    Dan O Neill
Age in 1910:    76
Birth Year:    abt 1834
Birthplace:    Ireland
Home in 1910:    Faribault Ward 3, Rice County, Minnesota
Address:  414 Third Avenue South [likely an apartment house, as there were other families]
Immigration Year:    1870; also noted that he became a U.S. citizen (was naturalized)
Marital Status:    Married
Spouse's Name:    Bridget O Neill; her immigration year also given as 1870
Father's Birthplace:    Ireland
Mother's Birthplace:    Ireland
Household Members:
Name    Age
Dan O Neill    76
Bridget O Neill    76

I can't say whether the following are the same Daniel and Bridget, but it was close enough to Daniel's birth for me to include.  The stated immigration year was still after their marriage year of 1856.  Don't know if the boarder Charles Habeslon/Habeshon might be a clue, for someone from Daniel's past in Ireland.

1900 United States Federal Census about Danl O Neill
Name:    Danl O Neill
Age:    68
Birth Date:    May 1832
Birthplace:    Ireland
Home in 1900:    Faribault Ward 3, Rice County, Minnesota
Residence: West 4th St.
Immigration Year:    1860
Relation to Head of House:    Head
Marital Status:    Married
Spouse's Name:    Mary
Marriage Year:    1862
Years Married:    38
Father's Birthplace:    Ireland
Mother's Birthplace:    Ireland
Household Members:
Name    Age
Danl O Neill    68
Mary  O Neill   68, b. Feb. 1832, Ireland.  Mother of 8 children, 7 living.
Chas Habeslon    55, b. Ireland, immigrated 1865; boarder
Emma Geise    21, b. Germany; boarder

Familysearch.org had some mid-decade Minnesota state census results for Daniel.  You need to register to see the census images, which I didn't do.  Here was one possibility, indexed:

Name:    Dan Oneill
Event Type:    Census
Event Date:    1905
Event Place:    Faribault, Ward Number: 03, Rice, Minnesota
Gender:    Male
Age:    78
Race:    White
Birthplace:    Ireland
Birth Year (Estimated):    1827
Father's Birthplace:    Ireland
Mother's Birthplace:    Ireland
Page:    36
Line Number: 37 , GS Film number: 928812 , Digital Folder Number: 004521014 , Image Number: 00550

Familysearch also had birth information for some of Daniel's children.

I enjoyed reading about Matthew O'Neill's headstone ceremony.  Thanks.

Once again usapetticrew many thanks for your sterling work.
Its great to see so many different census returns are available not like Ireland we only have 1901 and 1911 to search on all the rest were destroyed along with some church records which makes Irish Genealogy very difficult pre 1850.
I was lucky with one branch got them as far back as 1760s but the O'Neills only to 1832 for another brother John and thanks to the great Irish Rebel John Devoy who wrote Matthews obit in The Gaelic American 1904 where he mentioned that Matthew had a brother Samuel killed in 1859 while working on a church in Dublin i eventually found him buried with his father Maurice in Glasnevin cemetery.
You have given me a lot to ponder over for which i am very grateful.

Many thanks again
Cheers
