The Bradley family near Buncrana, Donegal
« on: Thursday 17 January 13 18:39 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for any information relating to the following Bradley Family. My grandma Lizzie Bradley was born about 1904. She was born to Rodger Bradley and Annie Bradley(nee McCloskey). They had a number of children some of whom I remember having met in the 60's and early 70's at the family home on the right hand side of the road running from Carndonagh to Buncrana in an area that I think was called something like Minkie's lough.
I have identified the relevant family in the Irish census of 1911 by which time Rodger has died, I believe. He was at the address in 1901. It is noted as Mintiaghs - DED, Ballinlough - Townland
The occupants of the property were

Bradley   Neil           64      Male   Head of Family
Bradley   Anne    48   Female   Sister in Law
Bradley   John           12   Male           Nephew
Bradley   Mary      11   Female   Niece
Bradley   Madge   9   Female   Niece
Bradley   James   8   Male           Nephew
Bradley   Bridget   7   Female   Niece
Bradley   Annie          6   Female   Niece
McCluskey   Margret   82   Female   Boarder

The widow Annie and her children were living at the home of her brother in law, Neal.
Annie, who is my great grandma lived there until 1971, when she died at what I was told was the age of 101 years, She was bedridden for the last 18 years of her life and was cared for by her daughter Annie Frances. Nearby I think was Annie's brother, James. Their sister Bridget married Johnny Doherty (Callahan) of Carndonagh and they went to Oregon, USA in 1929.
The reason my Granny is not registered at the family home, is because she had been sent to live with an uncle and aunt in Glentogher, Carndonagh.
Can anybody tell me what became of my Granny's brothers and sisters....so that I can properly include them on my family tree.................Thankyou

The latest available Irish census is 1911 (which you already found). The online civil registration index goes up to 1958 (1921 for Northern Ireland counties) but with a common surname such as Bradley and no unusual first names it would be difficult to identify the family in the index.
Have you asked any possible family members for information? checked headstone inscriptions? church records?
The sister Bridget that went to the U.S. will likely be easier to trace- the 1940 census has been released and there are other resources on www.familysearch.org you can check.

The 1901 census does list a Rodger Bradley with wife Anne in Ballinlough townland:
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Donegal/Mintiaghs/Ballinlough/1182212
I can't see his death in the civil registration index 1901/1911.

For reference, here's the family you found in 1911-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Donegal/Mintiaghs/Ballinlough/492490
However, 2 of these children should be listed in the 1901 census as infants but are not with Rodger and Anne- unless perhaps they are not all Anne's children? the relationship listed is to head of household (Neil).

Lizzie Bradley in 1911 is in Carrowblagh townland:

Thankyou for your comments. All points you make have been noted and largely acted upon.
I really need some local knowledge input which is why I indicate so much in order to accurately identify the correct family. Currently unable to visit parish records......no known relatives alive whom I can now ask.
Might be able to access a photo of the family home.
Yours Zed

Hi again,
I already have the info you post regarding Bridget and Johnny...........it is possible that the only people with the information I am after will be their children/descendants.......(Mary Frances and Eunice) or perhaps someone in the Buncrana area who knew of the family...........or even a descendant of one of my Granny's siblings who might be stll be alive.
Very impressed with all your help suggestions
Thanks Zed

An obituary for Bridget "Bridie" Doherty appeared in the East Oregonian published 4 Nov.2003 Pendleton, Oregon.

However, I found a very nice obituary for Bridget in another newspaper online (free) which lists lots of her family! Click here

Let me know if you'd like me to do a bit more digging for recent family details.
