Captain John Cooper of Danbury. Died 1732 Danbury Essex
« on: Sunday 05 October 14 18:07 BST (UK) »
How would I find out what he was a captain of? It just says Capt. John Cooper. His children have the prefix 'Mr' on their children's baptismal entries.
I posted this on the Essex board, but probably should have put it here. Not sure how to link the two posts.

Not sure how to link the two posts.

(1) Just click the cursor anywhere in the address box (top left corner). If the whole address is not highlighted then Press <Ctrl> A to get the whole entry; then <Ctrl> C to copy the address.

Go to the second post and do a REPLY. Add a few words, then press <Ctrl> V to Paste the address.

or (2) Once the address is highlighted you can also press the right button to get the cut and paste options.

Thanks  :)
Am on my iPad at the moment, but will do that once I open my laptop up. At least I'll know how to do it now.

Regarding the Captain, if he was in the army his commissions, promotions etc should be listed in the London Gazette archive - https://www.thegazette.co.uk/all-notices

However it is tricky to search, especially for a common name. You need to start by limiting the dates to say 1700 to 1735. Also as you will see they used OCR to scan the pages quickly and with these old records there are a number of miss-reads. You may be better off looking for clues about a regiment etc from wills etc.

Note after trying john you need to try jno. Also they used 2d and 3d instead of 2nd and 3rd in those days.

Can you lay out all you know. I've done a search on the internet and the name comes up often. Was he a captain Army, ie company commander, captain RN or 'merchant navy'. 1732 was peacetime, War of Spanish Succession ended in 1714 if I remember correctly.

Hi. Thanks for looking.
I'm sorry but I know nothing about the military side.
All I have is that he was married in 1695 in Little Ilford, to Etheldred. It says they were both of Danbury. Little Ilford is a long way away in those days. Maybe he was posted there? It doesn't say Captain on his marriage record.
He is mentioned in Etheldred's father's will: Daniel Nash who died in 1716. It says that he leaves the bond he had made with him to John.
His burial record, in Danbury, on 30 Jan 1732, says Capt John Cooper.
I don't have a birth date. I'm guessing around 1670, but that's purely on his marriage date.
I only have Essex parish records and Ancestry to go by at the moment, as not sure where else to look. Don't seem to have any other military in the family!
Any information gratefully received 😄
