Frank Mowbray Dutton
« on: Tuesday 08 July 14 21:49 BST (UK) »
I have a Frank Mowbray Dutton, who was born in Lambeth, Surrey in Jun qtr 1867.

In 1871 he was staying with his aunt, Ure 'Hartshorn' in Plumstead, Greenwich
Frank Dutton, Visitor, M, 5, Middlesex, Lambeth

In 1881 he was staying with his aunt Ure 'Hartshorn' in Lambeth
Frank Dutton, Nephew, M, 15, Lambeth

Not found in any UK census after this, no marriage/death records found in UK.

His daughter, Jessie Dutton, was born in USA, it is reasonable to assume that he went to USA to work, no travel record found under the name of Frank Dutton.

In 1901 and 1911 Jessie was staying with her grandfather, Frank Dutton in Peckham
Jessie Dutton,  Granddaur, Unm, F, 6, America, B.S.
Jessie Dutton, Granddaur, Unm, F, 16, Clerk-Mercantile, U S America

In 1915 she married Lessy Gladwin Symond at All Saints, Hatcham Park, Lewisham, London
Jessie Ada Dutton, Age: 21, Spinster, Father Frank Mowbray Dutton, Gentleman

So far, so good.

No records found for birth of Jessie Dutton, c 1894/1895 in USA
No records found for marriage of Frank Mowbray Dutton c 1893/1894 in USA

However, there is a Frank Dutton Mowbray, married 20 Oct 1893, Troy, New York, USA to Jessie May Talmage.  They had a daughter, Jessie D Mowbray, born 30 Jul 1894, her mother died in childbirth, aged 20.

Frank Dutton Mowbray in US became valet to Howard Gould, a financier, and there was a court case reported in the newspapers in 1900.

What are the chances that Frank Mowbray Dutton and Frank Dutton Mowbray are one and the same?  There are inconsistencies, but there are similarities as well.

I have found conflicting evidence as to Frank Mowbray's place of birth - quite a few shipping records found for him, sometimes US citizen, sometimes UK citizen.
1900 US census has the following, possibly the right one, though the immigration year is incorrect if he was with Ure 'Hartshorn' in 1881

Frank D Mowbray, Servant, White, Male, Born Feb 1867, Age 33, Widowed, Cook employed for 3 months, Born England, Father born England, Mother born England, Immigration year 1878, Years in US 22

Can anyone help me to find any other records for either of the Franks?

There are many articles on http://www.fultonhistory.com/fulton.html

In a 1902 article NY Evening telegram

Mowbray was called as the first witness. He said he was born in London and that his fathers name was Frank Mowbray Dutton and that his name was also Dutton but that he changed it to Frank Dutton Mowbray 20 years ago because he stuttered a little and could not pronounce Dutton easily. etc etc.,

Thank you so much everyone.

Shelley - the 1935 record does look like it could be him, so I can hopefully find him in 1910, 1920 and 1930 census.

Sandra - I thought that they were probably the same person, but thought I may never be able to prove it.  Now there is a published newspaper article where he acknowledges the change of name - fantastic!
His father's name was in fact Frank Leicester Dutton, rather than Frank Mowbray Dutton, but nearly everything else matches.

I had found 1912 shipping record from this end -
    Departure 27 Jul 1912
Frank Mowbray, 44, Farmer, US citizen, Intended country of future residence America
Jessie Mowbray, 17, Cook, US citizen, Intended country of future residence America
Departure Southampton, England Destination New York, USA Ship Name - St Louis

and (image not viewed)

    Arrival 5 Aug 1912
    Frank I. Mowbray, 44 y 6m, Last Place of Residence: Troy, N. Y.
Departure Port: Southampton Arrival Port: New York Citizenship Status: X
    Ship Name: Saint Louis

Jessie D Mowbray, 17, Unm, Last place of residence Troy, N. Y.
Departure Port: Southampton Arrival Port: New York Citizenship Status: X
    Ship Name: Saint Louis

I had found the departure to US of Frank Mowbray on the Majestic 1 May 1895.  There is no corresponding UK arrival for him.
The 1895 New York Passenger list with Frank D Mowbray, 29 and Mrs J Mowbray, 32 does not fit in with known facts.  Jessie snr died in childbirth on 30 Jul 1894.  However, there is no arrival in UK for Jessie jnr.   Could you check the details again for me please - could it possibly be Jessie jnr, a baby not yet one?

Answer one question, find ten more to replace it.

Thanks again, Sandra and Shelley

Very difficult to read who travelled with Frank but have found the other person transcribed as Ure M Mowbray born 1862.
Coincidentally Ure (born 1832) was the name of the Aunt he was with in 1871  ???
Taking another look at the image with a magnifier and my specs on it does look like Ure M and not Mrs J   ???
