Missing on 1901 Census - BRYANT
« on: Wednesday 12 February 14 11:01 GMT (UK) »
Hi Folks,

I'm looking for George Spurgin BRYANT and his wife Pamela (nee O'Neill) who married Lambeth 1898.

Can't seem to find them anywhere after 1898. Hoped to find something on the 1901 or 1911 census in England but they seem to have vanished. May be they've immigrated  ???

George was born 1854 Kensington, a Draper by trade. Know nothing about Pamela at all.

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks

Di

He may be the (married) George S Bryant, 46 b Paddington, lodging with a Smith family in Watford in 1901.  His occupation is "Agent for Sewing Machines", as is that of the other lodger, so perhaps they were travelling salesmen. RG13 piece 1316 folio 94 page 23
Ayr: Barnes, Wylie
Caithness: MacGregor
Essex: Eldred (Pebmarsh)
Gloucs: Timbrell (Winchcomb)
Hants: Stares (Wickham)
Lincs: Maw, Jackson (Epworth, Belton)
London: Pierce
Suffolk: Markham (Framlingham)
Surrey: Gosling (Richmond)
Wilts: Matthews, Tarrant (Calne, Preshute)
Worcs: Milward (Redditch)
Yorks: Beaumont, Crook, Moore, Styring (Huddersfield); Middleton (Church Fenton); Exley, Gelder (High Hoyland); Barnes, Birchinall (Sheffield); Kenyon, Wood (Cumberworth/Denby Dale)

O'Neill sounds a tad Irish so maybe after they married they absconded to Ireland.

Following on from George being separate from his wife in 1901, here's a possibility for Pamela.

Pamela Bryant, married, 42, dressmaker b Leysdown Kent, is a boarder in the household of James Howe at 6 York Mansions, Newington, Southwark in 1901.

Both the 1901 and 1911 Irish census are online (free) and they don't seem to be there. I did notice a Pamela Bryant lodging in 1901- she was married, a dressmaker and born Kent (from memory). We aren't allowed to do 1911 lookups but perhaps worth checking for the 1901 Pamela & George (in separate households) in 1911 as that census asked married women how many years married.

See that avm228 has found her  :)

Thanks AVM - I did see that George and wondered but as I couldn't see Pam anywhere I thought they may have left the country. I'll follow that George backwards and see where he originated just in case.

O'Neill sounds a tad Irish so maybe after they married they absconded to Ireland.

You could be right there as I couldn't find Pam in England before their marriage (at least not with her surname spelt that way). Maybe I missed her somewhere.  ???

Thanks for your help

Oops - RED POST

Will post this anyway

That certainly looks interesting in light of the fact that there's a possible George travelling elsewhere. Many thanks.

Thanks for checking the Irish census etc aghadowey.

I'll see of George & Pam are together in 1911. Might be easier if she's the lady born in Leysdown Kent - would then confirm the 1901 census where she's not with George.

Thank for your help

Di

I wouldn't assume that O'Neill was her maiden name unless you have evidence she was a spinster at the time of the 1898 marriage.  I also would take her reported age with a healthy pinch of salt!

For what it is worth the only Pam* birth reg in Sheppey district (covering Leysdown) 1851-1861 was this one:

Pamela Sarah Williamson, Dec qtr 1854.

There are two Pem* births which may be worth keeping in mind:

Pemala Goodwin Jun qtr 1851 Sheppey
Pemila Baker Mar qtr 1859 Sheppey (this one is promising on the dates at least)
