Yes, I also have this 1851. I agree this Dunfermline family does not fit. Many thanks for your efforts, it was good to get another opinion. It now remains to establish Bernard's real parents. According to his daughter Janet's death cert.(1855) he was born in County Monaghan, Ireland.

County Monaghan is where my ggg grandmother is from too  :)

Might be worth trying to trace the Francis Connoly who showed with Bernard in 1851? If his brother, you might get more accurate details on parents from that Francis' registrations in Scotland?

 I have had no luck with "young" Francis, possible brother or nephew of Bernard.

there was a hotel keeper Bernard Connolly in Crossgates around this time. He was Irish born and spent some time in Australia. Not 100% certain of the spelling as the family names seem to have changed a bit??. I've got dates and more family names if interested also the name of the pub.
