Burial Record information?
« on: Monday 25 August 14 16:29 BST (UK) »
Hi

Just need some advise,  My grandad died in 1980 and is buried in Philips park cemetery, he is an a IConsecrsted section  but position 9 in a burial of 12.

Does anyone know if that means he was been buried or cremated?

Also was there any memorial service given at the time?

thanks in advance.

He was buried in the Unconsecrated, non-conformist, Section, he was not cremated.  The unconsecrated section means he was not a Church of England.

If his burial was 9 of 12, that would suggest he is in a common grave, but do not confuse this with being a paupers grave.

If the family had wanted a service of some sort, it would most probably have taken place elsewhere or at the graveside. The Catholic chapel was demolished in 1976.

A bit confused here.

Assuming it is Section I of the Consecrated Section, then it's a C of E grave. Nothing to do with Catholics. There will be 12 bodies in the Grave, of which he was the ninth to be put in.

There may have been a service at the chapel or at a C of E church somewhere. He wouldn't have been cremated.

You are correct.

I section paupers graves used to be called "Single" then in the early 1950's they started to refer to them as "Public". But still paid for by the council at the time so must assume still paupers graves

I mentioned the Catholic Chapel being demolished in 1976 as there were 4 but only the Anglican one remains and it is in a poor state of repair.

I couldn't easily find any notes as to when the others were demolished.

I'm sorry Blackburn Fossil but I have to disagree with you.

At this time there is no evidence to suggest the local authority paid for the funeral.

Many families could not and still cannot afford a private plot, but they would still have paid for everything else to do with the funeral.

I think in 1980 you may still have got it paid for by the 'Social' as they used to say, if you had no money, or maybe still by the Social Services. At the very least you would have got a grant off the good old DHSS.

Not sure when all that came to an end. The last 30 years are a bit of a blurr. Might be something to do with word marriage!

Hi dawnsh

Sadly community funerals still take place today "Lucy Powell, MP for Manchester Central, said: “The number of paupers’ funerals being carried out in this day and age is a desperately sad and a tragic state of affairs. This is something you would associate with Victorian times – not Manchester in 2013.”,

So in the 1980's it must have been common place.

I just hope the totals per year don't rise because of this Governments attack on the poor.
