Dorothy May BARNES

Hi everyone.
I have been searching for the history of Dorothy May BARNES' since I was 13 yrs old.
In that time I have found her fathers name and thats it.
She just doesn't seem to want to be found.

She gave birth to a daughter in 1918 at the boarding house at 19 Argyle St, St Pancras. The child's birth certificate had no father recorded but was said to be M.V BARNES who was a soldier and was killed in action before the child was born.

She married a NZ soldier at the St Pancras Registry Office in 1919. Her age was put as 26. Fathers name Charles BARNES commercial traveler.
I have her NZ death certificate. She died in 1940 at the age of 47.

Is there any other way of finding her without having to order birth certificates with the names Dorothy May BARNES in the hope one with the fathers name Charles George BARNES?

It is possible she owned a haberdashery in London.

Any help is very much appreciated.

It probably was not the right one bit there are too many Dorothy M Barnes listed. I looked at a number but could not find one with father Charles. Looks like you will need the birth cert.

Doees the marriage give Dorothy's status?  Is she a widow or a spinster? Who are the witnesses?

Any clues in NZ - did she need to become naturalised? 

This sounds very challenging!

Thank you so much for your replies.

Her marriage cert gives her status as Spinster. I believe that my Nana's stepfather-the NZ soldier- is in fact her biological father. He would be given leave to go to England and return weeks afther he was supposed to.
It's strange that the supposed father-M.V BARNES-shares Dorothy Mays maiden name.
I always thought they made up that story to hide the fact that the child was illegitimate.

The witness to the wedding are: Esther FIELD and Ada DENHAM.
Esther was part of the family who owned 19 Argyle St. Ada is unknown.
They were also married by license.

I'm not sure if she became naturalized here in NZ.
What I do have is a lot of mismatching years of birth. Varying from 1893-1901.

It is very challenging!

This is unscientific, but in the 1901 census there is no M (first name) V(middle initial) BARNES (or variant spelling) who is male and born 1886 +/- 10 years.

So, no potential father!

Of course, it could be that they were enumerated without the middle initial...

It's funny that nana looks more like her 'step-father' then the child born after the marriage lol.
He always favoured nana too. Strange!!

What worries me is that Charles George BARNES is going to be away at work the night of the 1901 census. So until I find Dorothy Mays mothers name I won't be able to find her.
