Hale, Meole Brace, 18-19 c
« on: Tuesday 05 August 14 20:36 BST (UK) »
Hello folks

I'm interested in filling gaps in my knowledge of the Hale family who eventually lived in Meole Brace (and other parts of Shropshire before this)

This is what I know:

Robert Hale b 1752 Darnhall, Cheshire, m Elizabeth Freeman Ashby on 4 Sept 1783.
In 1801 their address (?incomplete) was "Burghley Villa, Salop"
Known children: Frances (no dates or further detail);
                       Elizabeth b 1785 Shrewsbury, was still living in Meole Brace as a spinster in the 1871 census;
                       Jane b 1792 m Henry Wase Whitfield in Stapleton in 1807 (Jane was probably just 15 and her husband seems to have been about twice her age!) - in Greenwich in the 1871 census; Jane's older son (also Henry Wase Whitfield) was a Big Cheese in the army in the Caribbean and eventually became governor of Hong Kong
                       Lucia b? married Charles Vaughn 1831 in Meole Brace

Robert died 24 Nov 1830 at Meole Brace. His wife died a month later.

In particular I'd would appreciate any of the following if anyone can find anything:
-- what was Robert's occupation? (I believe the family was wealthy and he would have held a professional position)
-- any birth details for Frances and Lucia, or any other children I've missed? What happened to Lucia after she married, where did they go?
--any sign of a will for Robert? -- or indeed for his wife, who was herself an heiress?

muchas gracias :)

Hiya Annie ...where did Robert and Elizabeth marry ?
is this Elizabeths baptism ??
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N2PF-CZL

ADDED...the only marriage I can find timewise for Frances
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NKCN-7J7   a marriage in Whittington in 1821(makes Frances 24 if it is her )
I don`t know Shrops - is Whittington close to Meol Brace where Lucia married in 1831 ?
added...by road now its 21 miles - probably then across fields / paths etc about 15 miles ...so I would make a note of that Frances marriage ...could Robert have been a a Farmer owner and had several farms  ??

Sorry, I don't know where they married, other than by licence in Shropshire!

Lucia Hale m Charles Vaughan on 21 Apr 1831, doesn't say occupations but Elizabeth Hale was a witness, so probably a relation to the bride.

Robert Hale is of St Chads and a Gent & Elizabeth Freeman Ashby is a spinster of this parish. So robert is wealthy to live off his money. There were 5 witnesses rather than 2??

Thinking about this a bit more --

Robert was 31 and a "gent" when he married one of the local heiresses.

I wonder if he was a widower? He was quite old for a first marriage.

I wonder where he'd got his money by that age? His father was still alive - he was a schoolteacher and a surveyor/cartographer - an educated man but I don't think they were rolling in money. However most of his children did well - Robert's brother was a solicitor and most of his sisters (one of whom was my ancestor) "married well".

A legacy from grandparents? I know nothing of his paternal grandparents. Maternal gps believed to be Josiah and Rebecca Collins nee Rice of Southwark. Some rich inlaws from a previous marriage maybe??

On Shrewsbury Chronicle 06 December 1777 there's an announcement of a hunt taking place at Robert Hales's the Bulls Head, Wem. Could it be yours?

I saw that, but I have no idea of how to prove/disprove it.

I can't see anything else in newspapers of the era that might be the right Robert Hale.

Since he was still of the parish of St Chad's (in Cheshire) when he married, I wonder if he was still living in Cheshire until that date.
