Death of Louisa Croft 1870's
« on: Saturday 08 March 14 20:50 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I'm trying to find the death of Louisa Croft.  She appeared in the 1871 census in Twerton Somerset with her husband Thomas Holloway Croft. He remarried in 1875 in Bristol Gloucestershire.  So I presume Louisa died sometime between 1871 and 1875 possibly in Somerset. Her parents were Joseph and Martha.

Thanks

The 1861/1871 shows her birthyear as 1830 so that would seem a logical death date given there are no other Louisa Croft's in that age range

Can't find her in 1881 though

Yes, that's what I though, maybe the 1890 death, but because her husband remarried in 1875 I thought she must have died before then, because surely he couldn't have remarried if she was still alive??

Many people did remarry without the death of a spouse or a divorce.

Remarriage was easier to cover up if either of the parties relocated, looks like Louisa may have come back to London.

Do you know when Thomas & the rest of the family went to Australia?

Interesting, so maybe the death of the Louisa in 1890 could possibly be her if Thomas could have just left and remarried without her dying.

Thomas, his new wife and family came to Australia in 1879.

Maybe I should order the death cert from 1890 and see if maybe it is her.

Actually was just relooking at this and Thomas went to Aust in 1879, but looks like some of the children left for Australia earlier than 1879.  Will have to have a look into that further. Maybe Louisa came to Australia as well?

In 1871 they had a 2yr old son Thomas Stephen G J G Croft b Peckham.  Did he go to Australia with Thomas as I can't find him on the 1881 census

The other children were adults by 1879 - do you know whether they also emigrated in 1879?

1871 ages as follows

Louisa Emma  18
Martha L 16
Clara E  13
Emily E  10

Thomas Stephen went to Australia in 1879 with his father Thomas Holloway Croft.

The other girls also went to Australia earlier
Louisa 1873 Age 18
Martha 1876 Age 21
Clara 1875 Age 16
Emily 1875 Age 14

Now I'm wondering the 2 younger girls who travelled were only aged 14 & 16 . Would they have been able to travel by themselves?  Or would they have needed an adult with them .  They came on the ship the Winefred.  Is there a way I can look at the whole passenger list to see who they were travelling with.
