Deserters of WWI

I have questions about a man who deserted the RAF when posted in England during WWI. The records indicate that he deserted not once but twice in 1918, once in August and then in September.  If he had been caught would he then have been shot or punished in some way. He lived beyond the war years and I am wondering whether it would have been necessary for him to hide or change his identity  and if so how long would he have to keep this up once the war finished, a few months after his desertion?

  A case like this came up on Who Do You Think You Are.    I think they then found that he changed his name and avoided detection for many years after WW1.

Thank you Malcolm33. I have found information on the Who Do You Think You Are magazine wesite any many of my questions have been answered. I hope to watch the episode on Alan Carr. The man that I am researching also changed his name and disappeared for a while after the war. Oze
