Goerge Purvis (born c. 1840, d. 1874)
« on: Sunday 10 January 10 23:01 GMT (UK) »
The above George Purvis was the son of George Purvis and Isabella Simpson and was married to Elizabeth Duffus. When his son Adam Purvis was born on 13th November 1874 in Glasgow the birth certificate states that George, his father, was deceased and "died April 1874".
My sister has searched for, but failed to find, the death certificate. We suspect George was a seaman so may have perished at sea or abroad.
Anybody have any suggestions where we can start to look to find a possible death cert?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Sancti - thank you for the response. I do not know where he and his family  lived at the time of the 1871 census. I will check with my sister (who is more concentrating on this branch of the family) and see if she knows.
Thanks again.  :)

Hi Sancti (or anyone)  :)

All we know is that one of George's children was born at 756 Gallowgate, Glasgow in 1870 and another (Adam Purvis) was born at 22 Preston Street, Glasgow in 1874 (the year George died).  If he was a seaman he may have been on his travels and maybe only wife Elizabeth appears on the '71 census. (There is no known link as yet to Maryhill)

The only 1871 census entry I can see, has father George as John  ???

John Parvis    30, engineer b. Glasgow
Elizabeth Parvis 27 b. Argyle North, Appin
Isabella Parvis 5 b. Glasgow
John Parvis   3 b. Glasgow
George Parvis 1 b. Glasgow

Address: 777 Gallogate, High Church Glasgow

Ths entry is from a transcript, not sure if the original image would show anything different regarding father's name.

Did Elizabeth Duffus remarry? Could this be her with some of the children in 1881:

James Murray 27, carter, b. Bridgeton, Glasgow
Elizabeth Murray 35 b. Oban Argyll
Isabella Purvis 15 b. Glasgow
John Purvis 13 b. Glasgow
James Murray 2 b. Glasgow

Address: 19 Nuncaton St, Bridgeton Glasgow

And possible entry for son George with paternal grandmother in 1881:

Isabella Purvis 60 b. Stirlingshire
Adam Purvis 35, Engineer Master b. Glasgow
William Purvis 27 Model Engine Maker b. Glasgow
George Purvis 10 grandson b. Glasgow

Address: 267 London Road, Camlachie Glasgow

Hi Willson,Sancti and MonicaL,

I am interested in your research into the Purvis family.  Have any of you come cross a Peter Black Purvis b.1901 in Stirling.  He spent a considerable amount f time in Singapore both before and after WW2  If you know anything about him or his descendants I should love to hear from you.  Happy for you to pm me.
Many thanks
