1861 Middlesex Census - Help - Quelch
« on: Saturday 19 January 13 05:17 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I have trawled through everything available to me (ancestry, FindMyPast, familysearch, etc) and I just cannot find this family unit in the 1861 Middlesex Census.  Of course, I keep in mind that "were they there on the night of the census" and have even searched other counties.  My family unit is as follows:

Father:  Thomas Quelch born circa 1826, Oxford, Master Bootmaker, Cordwainer
Mother: Eliza Emma Quelch (nee Callaghan) born circa 1828, Bristol (Waistcoat Maker per 1851 census)

Children - pre 1861 cenus:
Jane Emma born circa 1849 St Clement Danes
Eliza born circa 1854 West London
Thomas born circa 1856 (Exact place unknown) (can't find his birth)
Ann born 16 Oct 1860, 6 Market Street, St James's Square, Westminster (have her birth certificate).  This would be my closest reference for the 1861 census.

After 1861 Census
Agnes Mary circa 1862 St James, Westminister
Emma circa 1864 St Clement Danes
Thomas and Eliza Quelch marry 1864 St Martins in the Field, then travel to Australia.

Quelch is a surname that of course has various spellings and I have searched using wildcards and other possible spellings.  All of no luck.

My only last thought before I put this exercise away and stop it from keeping me awake at night, is that they are recorded on the "missing pages" of the 1861 census.

If anyone can offer me any guidance it would be most appreciated.

Help! ???
Suzanne

There are missing and incomplete pages on the 1861 census - some in Middlesex!

FindMyPast has a list of known issues:

Thank you for your reply to my post.  I think that my family just may be part of those "missing pages".

Hi

Your Archives Historical Street index for 1861 census goes through street by street in London listing the streets or parts of streets that are missing e.g. Market Street in St James Westminster

Thanks Valda for the confirmation. I guess I just have to accept that my family are contained in those "missing pages".  How disappointing.

Regards and thanks again,
Suzanne

Suzie, are you still searching for Thomas Quelch and family?  I am as well, connected to Jane Emma Quelch.

Hi Nomad

Welcome to Rootschat  ;D

According to her profile, Suzie hasn't been online here since October 2013 but should receive an email notification that you have posted and hopefully come back soon.
