Darvill - 1861 Croydon census.
« on: Tuesday 23 April 13 15:31 BST (UK) »
I am trying to locate my great x 3 grandfather Henry Darvill and his family in the 1861 census, but with no luck. I know he would have been living in Cherry Orchard Road, Croydon at that time as his son Alfred was born at that address two months before the 1861 census. (and the next child was born there too so am assuming there would be at that location.)

Henry Darvill - born 1821 - occupation: rail labourer/ general labourer
Eliza Darvill - born 1828 Croydon
Martin James Darvill - born 1849, Wolverhampton
Mary Ann Darvill - born 1850, Hastings, Sussex
William Henry Darvill - born 1851 Hastings, Sussex
Caroline Darvill - born 1853, Croydon
Amy Darvill - born 1855, Croydon
Elizabeth Darvill - born 1856, Croydon
Sarah Darvill - born 1858, Croydon
Alfred Darvill - born Feb 1861, Croydon.

I don't know whether the records for that area are actually missing or I just haven't been able to find them, but any help would be appreciated.

Nope can't see them  :(

When was the next child born after 1861?  I suppose they could have moved and then moved back again or be visiting relatives  :-\

Hi Milliepede, thanks for having a look. I was beginning to think it was just me, and that they would pop up somewhere.

Their next child was Emma Louis Darvill, born May 1862, same address as before.

I was hoping they were possibly mistranscribed or something but nothing's coming up.

Hello,

I wonder if they didn't register because they were too busy with a young family and baby  :)

Cherry Orchard Road should be RG 9/449 folios 158-162  according to Your Archives
Unfortunately, there are no house numbers entered from what I see.

regards
heywood

Yes, I think you may be right. (They ended up with 11 children....)  :) Thank you for that link, it's very helpful.

Looks like I'm not going to be able to find out what they were up to in 1861, which is unfortunate, but thanks for all the help.

Croydon Local Studies have street directories for the 1850s/60s and on and will do quick lookups free if you e-mail them (bottom of above link). You will probably get an automated reply saying they have a 20 day backlog, but others have reported a faster response on simple things.

Alternatively, I expect to be there next week, but with not much time to spare, so please try them first.

Thank you for that information Chris, I didn't realise they would have street directories for the  1850/60s. I will send them an email and see what comes up.

I have sent an email to the local studies unit, I did ask for some other details as well, so don't know how long it will be for a reply. Hopefully the information will be there. But thank you for your help, it's much appreciated.

Hello Maxima

I am currently researching my husband's family and am trying to find out some information about his Great, Great Grandparents, Henry Darvill and Eliza Beadle.  I notice from this site you may be able to help me so was wondering if you're able to let me have further information about them?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Many thanks.
