Joe Sinn - Quebec
« on: Thursday 16 October 14 18:06 BST (UK) »
My mother's grandfather supposedly came to Canada from China (rumour has it he had a second family in the Philippines).  I know he was married in Quebec in 1904 (have certificate) and I have records of him on my Aunt's and Uncle's birth certificates (all Quebec).  He died in Ottawa in 1939.

Aside from the marriage cert and baptisms I can't find anything on him.

Any help would be appreciated.  Birthdate?  When he arrived in Canada? Real name?  I'm sure Joe isn't short for Joseph in China.  On my grandmother's marriage certificate her last name is recorded as Joesinn.

I could even use some tips for researching Chinese immigrants in Canada.

Thank you in advance,

~Keith

This looks like the family in the 1921 Canada census:

Residing 261 St George Montreal

Joe Sinn 45 b. China arrived 1890
Gertrude 35 b. Quebec
William 16 Son
Marian 14 Daur
Oscar 10 Son
Obus (?) 8 Daur  (Avis perhaps?)
Doris 6 Daur
Pauline 1 Daur

All children b. Quebec

Plus 5 roomers.

I've got them in the Ancestry 1921, transcribed as Joe Jim.

That daughter really does look like Obus or Obas.

Thanks,

I never saw the 21 census (maybe because I wasn't looking for Joe Jim).  That's them for sure and it is Avis (my grandmother)  Thanks again, I now have an approximate birth year and entry into Canada.

I think this might be the family in the 1911 census....as Wing. Eveline is still alive at this point. What the enumerator wrote was what he heard or interpreted from forms filled out by householders.

what do you search to figure that out?  Wing and Sinn aren't even close.  I appreciate the help.

I can't speak for Polar Bear (who by the way is amazing at the genealogy game :) ) but I suspect she did a search for Joe/Joseph [no last name] born in China around 1876 and residing in Quebec. This gives precisely one result :)

The enumerator's handwriting is sloppy and the name is not clearly Wing (or much of anything else for that matter). But these are the family members, residing at 1497 Alexandra:
Joseph born Nov 1877 in China, occupation Buanderie (laundry)
Gertrude b Aug 1883 Quebec
William b Feb 1905 Quebec
Mar[something] b Mar 1907 Quebec
Eveline b Dec 1907 Quebec
Oscar b Nov 1910 Quebec

Thanks for the kind words, China  :).

That method was what I used on Anc....ry and then I used the info to find the family in on the automatedgenealogy website for the image. And the name as Wing is certainly not clear, for sure.

No sign of Joe in the 1901 census yet but he should be there somewhere.

Probably under Jonovski.

PB you're awesome.  In the future I may have a real hard one for you; an illegitimate uncle with an unknown birth name.
