William Steele/Nixon and James Steele 1800 - 1813 Bewcastle
« on: Thursday 28 August 14 12:14 BST (UK) »
Hello

William Steele or Nixon was born in 1800 in Bewcastle to Sybil Steele and Robert Nixon

On the actual record, is his surname Steele or Nixon?

They never married so I assume he did not take the name Nixon, however there is no William Steele, born 1800 in the censuses, but there is a William Nixon

William had a brother, named James, born 1813 in Bewcastle whom was an illegitimate child of Sybil, named as Sybilla, I cannot find a death date or any mention in the census, any help tracing him will be appreciated

my thanks

Bewcastle burials 1813-1839 record a William Steele buried 27 Mar 1826 of Pike Foot, 26 years.

Sybil Steele was buried 19 Aug 1829 of Cross Hill, 67 years.

Thank you

The death year for William sounds right. Did he marry and have children?

The death date for Sybil I think is incorrect, she died in 1839 in Crossgreens. James Steele was born in Crossgreens.

But I thank you for writing it down in either case

Also, is there anything for James Steele, born in 1813?

The only mention of James Steele in the Bewcastle records is his baptism 18 Apr 1813, son of Sybilla.
There is no marriage of William recorded in Bewcastle, but I would not rule this out as the groom usually married in the bride's parish, and she may not have lived in Bewcastle.

From your earlier post, it seems William did not marry as he died aged 26. Its likely he never married and that's why I cannot find him in the census

Still cannot find anything of James, its as if he just vanished

Hi

Had a look at the baptism record for William 1800. The record was quite difficult to read and part of it was a bit squashed up.  It says "William son of Sybil Steel of Atheycroft? and supposed Robt Nixon of ?Stead."

The James record in 1813 says "James illegitimate son of Sybilla of Crossgreen."  No mention of a father.

I also looked at the Bastardy orders for Steel and Nixon but couldn't see anything.

thanks steelos - mrs

I am thankful that you checked the bastardy bonds because I was considering trying to look for them there, but now that we know they are not on there, there's no point of me checking.

Its strange how James simply disappears from the records, from an earlier reply on this post, it seems William died young aged 26 without any marriage or children

Is there anything in the marriages and deaths for James? Perhaps he died very young

Looking at the census, there are no James Steeles born in 1813 listed as having been born in Bewcastle, but there are number born in 1813 in Cumberland, the problem is that there is nothing to connect them to my ancestor
