Pelagai or Morgan Farrell Cuffe St Dublin
« on: Wednesday 23 July 14 22:00 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I came across the marriage cert of my great great grandparents John Murphy & Julia Farrell in 1858 at St Nicholas of Myra Church Dublin.
Marriage cert states her father is called PELAGAI Farrell
Anybody ever hear of this name.
Anyway came across a man called Morgan Farrell also from Cuffe Street.
apparently Pelagia means from the sea and Morgan means from the sea.

Do you think the priest who done the marriage tried to 'latinise' the name Morgan?

John and Julia went on to have many children one of them called Morgan. Their children's godparents seem to be sons of Morgan Farrell so I'm certain of the link.
Julia also had a brother called Morgan Farrell.
Morgan Farrell senior lived to a good age.
His death notice in the Freemans Journal asked that Australian and American papers should take note.

Anybody related to the Farrells of Cuffe Street or the Murphys of Synge street. All Diarymen!

It was normal to change the first name to Latin.

Thanks for all the replies.
Denis Farrell's father is Morgan Farrell.
Also Denis Farrell is listed as a godfather to one of John and Julia's  children.
think i can presume that Pelagai/Morgan are variations of the same name.
Morgan Farrell's wife was Rosanna(?White)so Denis must have named his child after his mother.
thanks so much for all the replies. Anybody have any links to these Families
