Immigration to Canada
« on: Thursday 29 January 09 09:58 GMT (UK) »
Hello listers

I have read the notes of Passenger lists to Canada but I don't seem to be able to get any further than Ancestry.

I don't know how difficult this request is but all I know is that Benjamin and Catherine Corfield emmigrated to Canada sometime between 1901 - 1922. They are both died back in England.

I would be grateful for any help or advice.

Best wishes
Shirles

Just did a quick check on incoming ships to Uk but didn't find them... It's late here and I am afraid my eyes are all blurry.

If there is no answer by tomorrow I will give it another go, trying to find how they got back to England.

Hi Charlotte and Dolly Lee

I'm sorry my request wasn't clear ~ I was wanting to know when Benjamin and Catherine went to Canada and when they returned, but I didn't have any other information, except they died here in 1922, Benjamin a bit before that I think.

Dolly that is fantastic, Family folk lore had them leaving for Canada in 1901, which I have always accepted, but I recently found them on a 1911 and they were still in England.  That could have meant they had gone to Canada and come back during that time, but what you have found confirms they went after the 1911 census.

Mary Elizabeth age 2 (is also on the 1911 as a daughter) must be a Granddaughter as Catherine would have been 58 when she gave birth.  Their eldest daughter was Mary Elizabeth and I am wondering if it was her child.  Benjamin and Catherine had 8 children, the youngest Alfred would have been 16.

If you can find their arrival back in England that would be great.

Thank you ever so much, I am really grateful.

Best wishes

Corfield, Benjamine age 63 farmer  born England

     "        Mary                   2              born England

That passenger list entry also says they were going to his son.

I did a search of the 1911 Canada census and there was a Simon Corfield in Niagara Falls listed as follows:

5 Heywood Avenue, Niagara Falls, Ontario

Simon Corfield, head, Jul 1885, 26, England, imm 1907, polisher at silver works
Cecilia Corfield, wife, Dec 1886, 25, England, imm 1908
Harry W Corfield, son, Apr 1909, 2, Ontario
Alec Corfield, son, Apr 1910, 1, Ontario
David Corfield, boarder, Mar 1889, 22, England, imm 1909, polisher at silver works
William Corfield, boarder, Oct 1891, 19, England, imm 1910, labourer
William Knott, boarder, Jan 1888, 23, England, imm 1910, labourer

Here's a link to the census image at Library and Archives Canada (starts on line 3):
http://data2.collectionscanada.ca/1911/pdf/e002034504.pdf

It would appear that Cecilia died within a few years of the 1911 census as Simon/Simeon remarries in 1916 as follows:

Simeon Corfield, 32, born Brentwood Eng, son of Benjamin Corfield and Catharine Hughes married Mary Adams, 25, born Bauchory Scotland, daughter of Robert Adams and Mary Lindsay on 2 Dec 1916 at Niagara Falls, Welland County, Ontario.

I did find a Harriot Cecilia Corfield who died at a sanatorium in Muskoka District, Ontario from TB on 14 Nov 1915. She is listed as married, 29 years, 11 months old and born in London, England. Unfortunately her husband's name isn't given but the information there does match with the Cecilia married to Simeon.

Are you sure Benjamin died in England? I found a death for a Benjamin Corfield, 74, on 13 Apr 1919 in Niagara Falls, Ontario although he is listed as being born in Wales on the death registration. His parents were said to be Benjamin Corfield and Eliza Higgs.

I have a few more things to check but will post this for now.

Jacquie

Noted: Edited to add William Knott/Nott as a boarder as listed on the census.

Hello Jacquie

This is absolutely fantastic ~ Benjamin Corfield parents were Benjamin and Adeliza Corfield nee Higgs (Known as Eliza).  I have a death date for Benjamin of 4 Dec 1916 and assumed is was the right Benjamin, quite obviously wrong.  I do have Catherine dying in 1922 in Westbury, Shropshire.

It is really interesting to know they went out there to join their son Simon and he had two wives Cecilia Smith and Mary Adams.
Family folk lore said a man in Canada gave my cousin some Corfield information, but we couldn't understand how he knew.  It is making more sense now.

Thank you ever so much Jacquie ~ I look forward to seeing anything else you may find.
Kind regards
Shirles

I found the details from Simeon's first marriage:

Simeon Corfield, 23, born in Burntwood England, son of Benjamin Corfield and Catherine Hughes married Harriet C Smith, 22, born Clapton London, daughter of Henry Joseph Smith and Emily Skinner on 1 Jul 1908 in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

It would appear that the boarder, David Corfield, was actually his brother and he married the sister of Simeon's first wife. I have found a marriage registration for him as follows:

David Benjamin Corfield, 24, born in Standfordshire England, son of Benjamin Corfield and Catherine Hughs married Ada Smith, 22, born in London, England, daughter of Joseph ? Smith and Emily Skinner on 13 Mar 1913 in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

I couldn't find a marriage for William but will keep looking.

They left Liverpool on the Victorian on 9th June 1911,bound for Montreal.

Mr B Corfield labourer
Mrs Corfield wife
Miss M Corfield child.

Also travelling with the same ticket number were...

Mrs M E Nott? married but not travelling with husband
Mrs Glen   ditto
Miss K Glen child
Miss J Glen child

In fact Mrs Nott is listed before the Corfield daughter.

I would imagine they knew each other?

Carol
