Lt. James Lindsey Alexander
« on: Friday 21 November 14 03:28 GMT (UK) »
James Lindsay Alexander was born on April 21, 1893 on Mons Road?, Ontario to James G. Alexander, a veterinary surgeon, and Olivia "Lizzie" Anne Lindsey. He attended the University of Toronto as a student of Forestry up to 1918 and took part in the university's C.O.T.C.  Can anyone help me find where he is buried or any other information about his life?

Hi,

Looks like his military file has been digitized... it is on the Library and Archives Canada site.

http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/military-heritage/first-world-war/first-world-war-1914-1918-cef/Pages/item.aspx?IdNumber=4191

I am pretty sure his birth place is Mono Road, Ontario... north west of Toronto.

Thank you for taking a look at this for me, but I have this.  It gives a date when he died 3-4-51 (Is DD-MM-YYYY format commonly used in Canada), but it does not say where he is buried.

Hi,

I don't see an obituary in the Toronto papers.

The Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid has his parents in the Providence Pioneer Methodist/Sandhill Cemetery, Albion, Peel.  There is also a James listed... no middle name, so not sure if it is him.  This is probably worth checking.  You can contact the contributing organization for a lookup.  (This would be the Halton-Peel branch of the OGS http://www.haltonpeel.ogs.on.ca/ )

See OCFA search page here

Dad's obituary is in the Globe and Mail on April 9, 1937.  Says he died on April 7, 1937 at his home, Mono Road.  Husband of Mabel E Gurnett (so he must have married again).  Funeral at Providence Church, interment Providence Cemetery.

Unfortunately, there is no mention of the son... where he might be, etc.

Another article in the Globe and Mail about the father... very interesting.  May 12, 1933, page 11.  I will get back to him in a moment.  Mentions son Lindsay who is at present a Professor of Forestry at the University of Washington... so we might have to look at American records...  The other son, William, is in business in Regina.

Back to the father.  It says that he is a member of the Governor General's Body Guard.  He has been a veterinary surgeon in Peel County for 40 years.  He was an Orangeman.  He received his commission in the GGBG when he was 60.  He signed up for WW1, and was attached to the militia transport at the Niagara Camp.  Later, he was transferred to Valcartier as an inspector.  He is descended from 2 families of UELs.  He was born on the 5th line of Chinguacousy.  His father emigrated from Newton Stewart, Ireland over 100 years ago.  His mother belonged to the Graham family of Derry West.  As a vet, he still travels by horse and buggy over the county.   His wife is the sister of Inspector Gurnett of the Ontario Provincial Police, and is an artistic photographer.  Then, the article mentions the sons.

Looks like he came back to Canada - after some time in the USA

Here is an obituary for James Lindsay Alexander.  Very interesting.  Looks like he died in BC on April 4th 1951 (answers your question about the form of the dates)
