Beckwith family from Braintree.
« on: Monday 17 August 09 06:52 BST (UK) »
At the present time our earliest Beckwith comes from Braintree, we have now accumulated a lot of information about the downline family and the various "inward/outward" links.

The brick wall has now been reached, the next stage is to try and find siblings of Jonah (our patriach), and his ancestors and where they may have originated;

Hi Tassie.....have you come across John Beckwith and Elizabeth COCKRUM, daughter Priscilla Olive, married Thomas Henderson, 22nd October 1887, Temperance Hotel Kooringa (Burra) South Australia, in your travels. Helping an elderly lady with her Family Tree and Priscilla is her grandmother. Look forward to hearing from you.

G'Day "Big Fella"

Sorry I cannot help with that one, our first actual 'Beckwith' did not arrive in Australia until the mid 1880's and that was my Great Grandmother.
Have you tried the South Australian Genealogy Society and follow through from there?

here is their website http://www.saghs.org.au/index.html
cheers (and good luck)
Tassie

I have some Beckwiths from the Bocking/Braintree area of Essex in my family tree.  There are or were, from my observations, quite a few Beckwiths in that area.  There is even a farm named “Beckwiths” just outside Bocking.  As I burrow into my family tree I will look for possible members of your family.  On several occasions women with the surname Beckwith married men with the surname Reeve and many of their descendants commemorated their Beckwith ancestor by using Beckwith as a given name in naming their children.  It would be interesting to discover how a surname originating from the North ended up in Essex.  William Reeve.

Lots of Beckwiths in Bocking, but no Jonah. None in Braintree prior to 1790, nor rayne or Panfield, which are neighbouring parishes.
Interestingly, Jonah and Mary had both been widowed prior to marrying each other in Braintree in 1806. There are to johns in Bocking: one born to George and Sarah on 21/5/1778 and one to one to John and Sarah on 18/8/1777. Not far out when you consider they were illiterate. Could john have become Jonah?

Nothing in the neighbouring parishes of rayne, panfield, white notley, black notley, stilted or cressing either. Must have links with Bocking Beckwiths?
