James Bruce Laing married to Ann Young
« on: Sunday 21 September 14 05:27 BST (UK) »
Help please in tracing his parents, and place and date of birth.

Plus the place and date of his marriage to Ann Young.

He was a welll known Judge in India, late 1700s - 1800's and his children were also born there.

Probate for his death was  1st June 1825 giving an address in Streatham but he was due to return to India to rejoin his wife there.

Maybe he is Scottish with that name ?

All help gratefully received. Many thanks

 grh8343:) :)

Edit - The National Archives has a will for a James Laing of Streatham who died in 1831 http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D244119

This link may explain his origins as a doctor from north-east Scotland who returned to Britain from Dominica and lived at Streatham Hill

This site mention two of James Laing's sons being in the Indian Civil Service http://www.abdn.ac.uk/slavery/4p2.htm

This site makes reference to James Laing Snr's wife Eliza who died on Dominca on 8 March 1816 aged 61
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01a2m/

One of the previous link's mentions a memory of James Laing Snr's homeland with his  donation a clock to the tower of the church tower in Crimond, Scotland. Scotland's People site has a baptism of a James Laing at Crimond on 1 Jan 1748  with father Alexander Laing.

:)Yet again a success story where I have faltered!

Many thanks to you all for facts, stories etc - very grateful.

Again, would never have thought to have looked up anything for Dominica and Laing is a popular name in Scotland when I didn't have a clue!!

Thanks again,
