Northumberland / Hogg, Mary (1838)
« on: Friday 15 November 19 05:53 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for more information on Marry Hogg’s family (my great great Grandmother).

She married Samuel Kernes (1827 - 1885) in Durham in 1860. Their son Samuel is my great Grandfather (1872 - 1941).

I last see the family in 1881 census living in Wallsend.

Perthshire / Graham, Henry (1889)
« on: Friday 15 November 19 05:38 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for my Grandfather’s brother Henry. Henry was born in Avoch in 1889 (his mother Harriet McLean (1849-1889) died in childbirth).

I can still find the family in 1901 census living in Blair Atholl, Perthshire with their father(Donald 1837).

My Grandfather (Alexander 1887) came to South Africa sometime before WW1 - and survived Delville Wool. He married after the war and had 3 sons and a daughter.

I can find no evidence of Henry after 1901 census - I chased down a couple of red herrings - I am hoping someone can assist me.

Inverness / Donald Graham 1837

I am having some trouble finding some records for my great grandfather.  I have confirmed census' from 1871 to 1911. On the death certificate of his second wife Harriet (1849) McLean beneath his name in brackets it reads illigitimate.  Census records record, his birthplace as Daviot, Inverness and Portree.

I have been unable to find him and his first wife Catherine (1837) (maiden name unknown) and their eldest child Margaret (1858) in 1861, or any confirmed earlier records for him.  I do know that he was living in 1917 since he was still recorded on WW1 records as the next of kin to my grandfather Alexander (1887).

If you have any idea how I might to further my research, I would be most appreciative.

Europe / Rodel - Fahrwagen, Aargau, Switzerand
« on: Sunday 08 July 12 14:14 BST (UK)  »
We are descended from Heinrich (& Susanna) Rodel (b 1823) of Fahrwagen.  I consistently get hits for a Samuel (& Anna) Rodel. Can anyone tell me if they were perhaps brothers? I am struggling to get access to Swiss records.
Thanks

South Africa / Boxing genealogy conundrum
« on: Wednesday 13 June 12 14:07 BST (UK)  »
Boxer George 'Boer' Rodel was often talked about by family members.  However he turns out to have not been a Rodel at all but rather Lodewikus Val Vuuren.  He would have been about 12 when the boer war began, but his British and American promoters used his South African heritage and promoted him as a Boer War hero.

Born in Smithfield in OFS, he was miles away from the Rodel's in the Escourt area, but of an age with Jacob and Susanna's younger children (our direct family). If you have any idea how I can find out how he took on the Rodel name I would be most grateful.

For the boxing enthusiasts out there, I may have lost one boxing legend,  but have also discovered that Daniel Mendoza is my 5th great grandfather from my mother's side.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Samuel Kernes (Cairnes) 1827
« on: Wednesday 30 May 12 11:54 BST (UK)  »
Samuel Kernes (born 1827 in Halifax) married Mary who was born in the latter part of 1830's.  Some time back a family member searching decided she was Mary Hogg, but clearly in  census reports Samuel's Mary was born in Stockton.  Mary Hogg's records do not specifically mention Stockton.  I am finding possible matches with a Mary Weatherall.

Unable to find marriage records, I am a bit stuck.  Any ideas how I can clear this up and find poor Mary's family?

South Africa / Germiston Lake - 1941
« on: Sunday 27 May 12 11:21 BST (UK)  »
Samy Kernes was found dead in Germiston Lake bound with wire in 1941.  My granny was horrified of potential family scandal and didn't tell her children about the circumstances of her father in laws death.

If you can tell me more about him, or this event, or how to find out more I would be very grateful.

Australia / NOLAN - Bertram Edward - May 1883 -
« on: Tuesday 15 May 12 15:39 BST (UK)  »
My Great Grandfather Bertram Edward Nolan was born in Sydney in May of 1883.  At some stage he travelled to South Africa where he had 2 daughters.  Any assistance would be appreciated.
