Would there be any way of finding out if they had any children?

Would be detailed on their death certificates.  Alfred's would be probably the best one to purchase.

No births in NSW to 1913 and nothing in Vic to 1920 - limit of indexes.

I can't see any death or funeral notices on TROVE either.

I don't know of chatter living in Melbourne who could visit PROV to view Alfred's file.  For many years PROV would not copy files but suggest you had engage a recommended research agent  to view on your behalf.  Recently they have altered their policy and now offer this service for Victorian country residents and interstate and overseas researchers.  You need to order the file for reading then contact them to arrange for copying and pay with a credit card.  I haven't done this at all so can't advise you of the actual steps.

Ok. I couldn't see anything on Trove, which led me to post this topic to find them.

Alfred's mother died when he was c6 years old.

There is birth registration for Alfred Joseph DOWNING with same parents but in 1875 Reg#24142 and Alfred born 1873 died as Thomas Alfred in 1875 aged 18 months.

It is possible that Alfred Joseph's mother died in child birth in 1879.
