Craufurds in Sunninghill
« on: Thursday 20 March 14 12:48 GMT (UK) »
I have details of the burial of James Craufurd and his wife Mary at St. Michael & All Angels churchyard, Sunninghill. He died in 1816 and she in 1837, They were obviously wealthy and well connected . Her will refers to their home as being just "Sunninghill". Does anyone know where they actually lived. I have checked the newpapers of 1837-8 and can find no details of a sale.

Hi

There is a Mary Crawford aged 50 of Independent Means living in "Hawes Street" Sunninghill in 1841.

Thanks. I think that would be after the death of the Mary Craufurd I am looking  at. After I posted the query I found a reference to a Mary Craufurd living at Silwood Lodge, Sunninghill. I gather Silwood Park is now part of Imperial College, but I don't know if the Silwood Lodge she lived in is still identifiable. Do you know if it is?

Hi

Like you, I think that the place would not exist now.

There is always the chance that this property is still there as many in the area are 'listed'

They were also often leased from the landowner.

I have looked on two grave sites for St Michael's but can't see a stone for them photographed do you have a photo of their headstone.  :-\

Thanks for the suggestion about listed buildings. Like you I couldn't find any listing of the grave on any website but I spoke to the PCC Secretary and she had a handwritten archive of the gravestones and it was on there. I need to see it sometime as the date of death in the Will is different from that said to be on the stone.
