Quote from mearns and Mearns 1992.

Palmer's last extant letter to Rothschild is undated but it arrived at Tring on 3 september 1894 and was probably posted about two months earlier. Writing from 296 Parramatta Road, Petersham, on the outskirts of Sydney, Palmer explained that since his arrival he had been investigating the possiblity of collecing on some island, but had found the expense prohibitive. He was hoping to represent Rotschild in some way but as present settled at a nearby news agent.

So he was clearly near or a news agent.... so I think we are on the right track now.

Oh Yay  ;D
Terrific!

OK so here's what we have:
(It'll be good when the snippet view Newspaper entries get posted to the NLA site. Some of the language is 'funny' due to  the digital transcription process used)

Not yet fully digistised on the NLA site (due in a few weeks) - but these 2 snippets can be seen:
The Sydney Morning Herald... Thursday 5 May 1921, page 5

Age 64 - so born about 1856

I read it that he died ON his 64th birthday ??
The newspaper notice was 14 Feb 1920 - assume this is close to the actual dod.
If so, his birth may be registred March or June Qtr 1856.

Will have a look!

I interpret some text wrongly in my first mail. Here is the full text from mearns & mearns 1992;

Rothschild was a twenty-two year old student at Cambridge when he sent Henry Palmer to the Chatham Islands and he was so pleased with the consignments that he instructed him to proceed to Hawaii.

So age and Cambridge are two matters that I was incorrect with. He was a senior for George Campbell Munro when travelling, the latter was born at 10-05-1866 so he was older the Munro.

Thanks for all this information so far Ambly, wonderful.

Yours, Justin

That looks good Anna  ;D Well done!
I can't see a marriage in NSW fo them, so it could well be - and brings Cambridge back into the picture too - one might imagine Rothschild originally came into contact with HCP there?

Justin said earlier, HCP has spent some time in England between birding trips...

If it's right, they must have made a rapid passage to Australia  - their daughter Grace's birth was registered in NSW in 1894.

Re-reading the above Newspaper bits, I think it says he is
Formerley of Old, Northamptonshire
Old comes under the Brixworth reg. District

Which doesn't  necessarily mean he was born there

I wonder whether they were the Mr & Mrs H. S. [sic] PALMER who sailed London-Sydney on the Rome, 12 April 1894?  I can't find any other suitable candidates.

Re the above marriage which may or may not be them, little bit extra:

At St. Barnabas Church, Cambridge - Banns were called for a Henry Charles Palmer in 1893 and also a Nellie Taylor 1893.
People of both names were married there 1894, so looks like it was to each other.

That is from index, perhaps someone has the PR and could get full details.

I did find he was at Cambridge (he wrote from here) at 17-10-1893, and indeed he took the Rome ferry to Australia as quoted in Mearns & Mearns. Indeed all you found is more then ok, I'm a happy man with this suply of information, and many things have been double checked now. Any information when and where born, and parents would be very welcome.

Hi Justin and everyone

The NLA Site snippet I posted earlier said:
The Sydney Morning Herald... Monday 15 December 1919
Phillip-strcc-t, (street) Parramatta, Eliza, beloved wife of L\ YY'. Berrington, and muthci (mother?) of H. C. Palmer,

NSW BDM search for all Eliza death registered 1919 in Parramatta:
Ref: 26280/1919   - Eliza HERRINGTON - Parramatta
Father: (KING-PALMER)
Mother: FRANCES

Have now found:
HCP's mother Eliza  died 13 Dec 1919 Parramatta as Eliza HERRINGTON b abt 1842 Soham? CAMBS. She was wife of Edward Whitton HERRINGTON b 1844 Soham CAMBS,  died 1922 Parramatta, NSW.

They originate from Soham, Cambridgeshire
(the Civil registration district which covers Soham BMD's is: Newmarket)

http://users.tpg.com.au/adsl5jbs/steadman/steadman.wbg/wga4.html#I369
Not 100% sure of some fo the details on this website - although I think James HERRINGTON is probably 'right'

I think this is Edward & Eliza's  marriage:
http://www.freebmd.org.uk
Jun Qtr 1872, Newmarket
Ref: 3b - page 988
On that page are:
Edward HERRINGTON
Eliza PALMER

Has anyone please got access to the Parish record of this marriage?
Tring to establish if Eliza was a spinster PALMER, daughter of James PALMER & Frances.

Actually, I'm in the process of wondering if HCP is in fact the illigitmate son of Sarah PALMER a sister to the Eliza I think she is, and if Eliza 'adopted' HCP

Edward W & Eliza had a son born in 1879 Soham,  James Wilson HERRINGTON
Who died 1886 in Parramatta,

They also appear to have  had a child born in Australia 1882 named Edward W HERRINGTON.

Edward & Eliza's headstone - Mays Hill Cemetery, Parramatta

JAMES WILSON
beloved son of
EDWARD & ELIZABETH HERRINGTON
Died 17th February 1886
Aged 6 years & 7 months
my beloved wife
ELIZA HERRINGTON
Died 13th December 1919
Aged 78 years
Gone before but not forgotten
Also
EDWARD WHITTON HERRINGTON
beloved husband of the above
Died 16th May 1922
Aged 78 years
