The pre1953 date is misleading.  The changeover to Q/C badges was not instantaneous and many other ranks wore kIngs crown badges into the 1960s both because the new badge designs took some years to approve and old stock was used up before any new ones were made.  There were several infantry regtswearing K/C badge up to 1958 when they all adopted the new badges of the Brigade system.

Officers badges with the Q/C would have been made privately and so newly commissioned officers would be wearing the new q/c badges much earlier than other ranks.  However for the officers already serving in '53 then they would have kept their old badges for as long as possible:  firstly because they had to pay for new ones and secondly because the k/c badge marked them out as officers with a bit of service under their belts! 

To summarise the medal ribbon could have been earny after 1953 and still be worn with that beret badge.
