Land title/ house ownership records??
« on: Friday 18 April 14 05:17 BST (UK) »
Hope Rootschatters can help with this query ?

How do I found out about house ownership ?? My NORRIS gt gparents lived in a terrace house in Montague Rd ,Berkhamstead from c 1888 to mid 1960s
Neither  left a will. Gt gfather Fred d   died there in 1941  , & Gt gmother Frances   27 Jun 1950 .My grandmother Daisy BELLIS nee NORRIS continued to live there till mid 1960s .  By some means she made over the ownership of this house to my father ,who subsequently sold it

It took me quite a while to find its current owner and then it took him over 1 year to reply to my snail letter ! He has since sent me a few photos  but isn't interested in helping me solve this ownership puzzle.
 Fingers crossed

Have you checked with the Land Registry?

it may be worth a look at the digitised records, although the chances of finding anything are slim.

Many thanks for the digital archive address. No luck with that. Nothing came up even for just Hertfordshire...... but never know till you check.

Will check the Land Registry full web site

Thanks for gt grand father death info . Have alot on him except who owned  his /this house
Long distance away research is easier for some records than others !

Bye

Hi

"  By some means she made over the ownership of this house to my father ,who subsequently sold it "

You say Daisy somehow passed the ownership on to your father?
How did Daisy get to own it?
If there were at least 2 elder siblings then why didn't they inherit (a share of) the house?

have you considered the possibility that the house was rented for much of the time by successive members of the family, and your grandmother may have bought it from the landlord sometime after the end of the 2 world war, the rent acts of this time controlled rents at a very low rate and many landlords were glad to sell what was almost a liability.

I think registration of land would be a bit after the years you're seeking.
It came in bit by bit, with different areas slowly being done as properties were sold/bought.    Before registration the deeds contained all the previous owners.  I saw a couple of houses and they were quite interesting.   Since registration the deeds became obsolete and solicitors were known to collect them.  Now you just get a land registry certificate and the information is only from when it was first registered.
