Evan John Edwards - Llansannan (?)
« on: Sunday 20 April 14 11:58 BST (UK) »
This is a long shot as the details I have are so scant.

Seeking information of an Edwards family reportedly from Llansannan.  In particular an Evan John Edwards DOB 27th April 1851 (so too late for the census) who travelled to the US in the mid 1860's (?).  According to family story, his father was a John Evan Edwards, who died prior to the birth, and his mother was Ann(e). I am unable to pin down a marriage for the parents or a death for John Evan Edwards.  I wonder whether it's a John Edwards' birth I am looking for in 1851 and that the name Evan was added as a forename later.

He emigrated to the US as a teenager with his uncle Evan Edwards, settled in California where he had a long life and a family, passing away in 1941.  Records in the US state that his birth was in North Wales, yet give the precise date of birth.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as the information I have is so vague for his early life.

Hi Rosie

That he was just that - uncle......... so I would be looking for a household that had two brothers an Evan and a John (may be), the latter marrying an Ann(e) possibly.  Like I have said the information is a tad sketchy.

Thanks for looking for me - this is the info i have but its the birthday and entry for 1851 that has me tied in a knot - the census in 1851 was in March -  Evan has his birth date in April .  Now if that can be explained I would stop looking for other entries this iswhy I say I can't pin him down.  May be I am looking too hard

Thank you again

I have been having a look at the parish records for Llansannan and you have no doubt come across the 1850 baptism record for a 'possible' Evan Edwards, with the mother's given name as Anne but no father's name inserted.

I found it very strange that the date of the baptism was April 28th, when Evan says his birth date was April 27th. Is it possible that he was mistaken as to the year of his birth? It is possible that a christening was carried out the very next day, as April 28th 1850 fell on a Sunday.

The "Book of Common Prayer" states that The Curates of every Parish shall often admonish the people, that they defer not the Baptism of their Children longer than the first or second Sunday next after their birth, or the other Holy-day falling between, unless upon a great and reasonable cause, to be approved by the Curate.
