Poor penmanship - same last names???
« on: Friday 25 July 14 12:58 BST (UK) »
I have two different death records regarding members of the same family (Hunters of Philadelphia).

On the one record it appears the mother's maiden name may be Colnisa, Colvin, ????

On the second record (for a different family member), the informant's name appears to be Violet Closson?

My question is whether or not this could possibly be the same surname?

You're right about poor penmanship. Jane's last name appears to be written over at the end. I'm thinking it says Colnin whereas Violet, at the bottom, is different. At first glance, it does look like Closson, however, the word below it starts the same way and 'Cah' doesn't make sense for that word. Do you know what Violet's address was?
Researching: Cronin / Nolan - Gortadrislig, Kerry
Finn/Clifford - Callinafercy and Scort, Kerry
Spillane - Milltown
Also:- Byrne / Tyrrell - Dublin

No idea about the address.  I have been struggling with the Colnessa (sp?) name for years.  I thought I might have breakthrough with the other death record but I'm not sure how successful I will be.

I'm pretty sure the name is Closson (I think the word below is Caharine - possibly a mis-spelling of Catharine).

There are some similarities between the two surnames though difficult to say if they are (supposed to be) the same. You obviously have two different women here though, Jane and Violet.

Are there any other documents which may show the same surnames? Marriage or birth certificates for example ....

Could the first name be Colman, but it doesn't look anything like the other which I agree looks like Closson.
I agree with Philip the address could be Catharine Street. Incidentally there is a 2304 Catharine Street in Philadelphia, you can see it on Google Earth.

After discovering a number of other records I can confirm the last name was Conlin.  Thanks again for all of the help.
