Soldiers at the North Dublin Union
« on: Monday 20 October 14 16:05 BST (UK) »
I have recently discovered that a Joseph Johnson who records his occupation as a Bandsman was living at North Dublin Union at the time of his marriage in 1922.
Research on web shows the union became a barracks after 1918 and there are many references to some of the inmates but there is nothing about the troop stationed there.
Where can I find this missing info in order to find out more about Joseph Johnson.
Any help/ ideas  would be gratefully received.

Hi There

Was Joseph actually a military man ?

Was there an exact address on his 1922 marriage ?

What was his father's name and occupation on his marriage ?

Hello, thanks for quick response.
According to marriage cert, he was a bandsman living at North Dublin Union. There is a Joseph Johnson on the 1911 census residing at a hospital full of military personnel who could be the same person but have nothing to substantiate this notion. He was in The Royal Dublin Fusiliers. I need to find out which regiments were based at The Union for the time period.

North Dublin Union, to my mind though is not an actual address.

I thought it was the name give to the Workhouse / Hospital on the Northside of Dublin . . . as in the SDU was the name given to the Workhouse / Hospital on the Southside of Dublin.

Again though, what exact info are you looking for on Joseph and what do you already have ?

NDU was a military establishment from 1918 when the two unions merged, so it would seem possible that it was an address for military personnel and inmates.
I have a marriage cert for Joseph Johnson(1922) and Ellen Clarke and a birth cert for a child Eileen born 1923.
I am led to believe that the child went into the care of an orphanage whilst young but don't know what happened to the parents.!! Had presumed both died but could find no records for this.
Joseph states his father was also Joseph and a miner whilst Ellen's father was a workman.
I think that I have census records for Ellen's family for both 1901 and 1911 living in Dublin.
