Thomas ELLAM: Born 02/07/1838, Huddersfield, Yorkshire
« on: Wednesday 05 November 14 17:40 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

This request is rather like "flying a kite" because of a comment made by on RootsWeb in 1998, but sadly the emailer's address was obsolete.   The comment was that he was the emailer's Great Grandfather, Thomas ELLAM born in Huddersfield 1837, and was her Grandmother's father on her mother's side.

Thomas ELLAM, parents William and Nancy (nee BROOK), had 7 siblings Samuel (1826), John (1828), Hannah (1830), Sarah Ann (1831), William (1837), James (1841) and Joshua (1844).  He was a serial re-offender and eventually transported aboard theMerchantman to Western Australia in 1863, receiving his Certificate of Freedom in 1871.  During those 7 years he re-offended in 1867 and was sentenced to 6 months hard labour.   Nothing more is known about him, except the possible link mentioned above in NZ.   Research has covered many areas, including Public Family Trees (Ancestry), and the last sighting is definitely 1871.

I hope someone can help with details after 1871.

For the moment,

BAC3

Hi BAC3

Could you post the link to the 1998 Rootsweb message, please ?

Unless it is this one I found ??
Rootsweb :  dated 29 August 1998   :  " ... my grandmother on my father's side was an ELLAM.  Her father was born in England, Thomas ELLAM  1837".

I couldn't see any particular mention of "NZ"  ??

Hi BAC3

Mmm ... had been going to mention the email addresses ... because they seemed to me to probably be UK ones rather than NZ ???    ;D

The only thing I could find on him,  is the below link, and probably you have the info already, but I wonder if  asking on the Australia Board might throw up something.

Hi BAC3,

I agree with Lucy2; it might be best if I move this topic across to the Australia Board to see if anyone there can help. He might appear in records there.

I've had a quick look my New Zealand resources, and see records relating to Thomas ELLAM, ELLEM, EALAM, and EALIM, although none seem on first glance to relate to your individual.

Hi BAC3

Just looking at the Ancestry "Trees" re: Thomas ELLAM ...

The LOUGHR-1 tree contains a story (in several parts I think ?) ... but if you click on the "Thomas ELLAM - A Life of Crime",  you'll find added notes from other reseachers.    One mentions a Selina ELLAM (1878-1967) in which the author is trying to establish a connection to Thomas ELLAM.  [I just  thought this maybe sounded similar to the query you'd found earlier on Rootsweb ??? ]

Incidentally, some of the "trees" (@ ancestry) for Thomas ELLAM (convict in W.A.), suggest that he died in 1907 (ENG.) ?
