William Thomas Bunting 1863-1904
« on: Thursday 10 April 14 10:28 BST (UK) »
William Thomas Bunting 1863-1904 was my husbands Grandfather & was born in Manchester.

We have been searching for Williams Grandfather who was named on his son Thomas' marriage cert as Abraham Bunting (Joiner).Searches have come to nothing until we discovered that William Bunting as above had enlisted in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders in 1884 & was discharged in 1887 due to debility.

Due to not finding Abraham in any other extensive searches we are no wondering if there is a connection with Scotland considering that William enlisted in a Scottish regiment.

I do not have the resources anymore other than the internet as I live abroad & would appreciate any help in this matter.

Kind regards

Betty

I don't think the regiment joined is necessarily significant or relevant to place of birth.

Have you located the family in any census? That would be my first port of call.

I am a little confused about who is named on the certificates you have ...are you saying that Abraham is the grandfather of William? I think I must be missing something. Can you please clarify. :)

As an aside, have a look at "surname profiler" for distribution of the surname Bunting.  :)

Ok, I think I've sorted it out in my mind:

William b1863 Manchester, joined Argyll & Southern Highlanders

Is his father Thomas?

And Thomas's father is Abraham? (A joiner)

Yes,you have got it correct Ruskie

My problem is that although we have Thomas marriage cert to Margaret Connor who was of Irish extraction we cannot even pin down where Thomas was born.
We have found with the help of many people quite a few Abraham Buntings but they clearly do not match.
Thomas was born c.1841(not on any census) but was living in Manchester when he married in 1861.
However no-one can find him on the 1861c.Thomas died in 1867 still in Manchester.I have a copy of his death cert.
I know what happened to his wife ,children after his death.Margaret re-married in 1881 & William & his sister Mary Ann are on the 1881c not in Manchester but in Salford.
It is only in the last few days that we found out that William had joined the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. All this time we have been looking in England/Ireland to no avail for Abraham Bunting but just thought that this might be another connection
