What does Java Script mean? - Completed thank you
« on: Friday 03 April 09 08:56 BST (UK) »
Hi :)

I often get messages about Java update. Although I have been using a computer for years now, I don't really know what it actually does or how it helps my computer. I have had a look on the web but the explanation is too technical for me to understand. A simple explanation would be great please. I am always reluctant to update when I don't understand what they are for.

As I understand it Java is a computer language used to make moving images which are put in adverts and pop ups. Keep it up to date, you then avoid the delay when opening a web site using animations.

Java is a programming language, JavaScript is a scripting language.

Similar names, but the main difference is that Java can do things on its own (like animations), while JavaScript must be placed inside an HTML (web) document to function.

Hi Evie,

The others are right but here's some extra detail.

Java - A computer language that some programs need installed on your computer for them to run.

It is important to keep your version of Java up-to-date as some older versions had security holes in them that can be abused. Also, some programs written for newer versions of Java will either not run or fail if your version of Java is too old.

JavaScript - A language used by some web pages, usually just to make their pages look more sexy but sometimes the site just wont work without it.

JavaScript does not need updating, it comes with your browser and will therefore be updated whenever your browser updates itself.

Hi Paul,

I get a message from an icon in the bottom right of my screen which looks like a cup of steaming tea telling me that there are updates available, is this different? I'm sure it says Java, it's not there at the moment so I cannot check.
