Charles Thorp(e) b1802 South Kirkby
« on: Friday 05 September 14 09:23 BST (UK) »
Hi there, i have found a christening for my direct ancestor;

Name:   Charles Thorp
Gender:   Male
Christening Date:   07 Jun 1802
Christening Place:   SOUTH KIRKBY,YORK,ENGLAND (All Saints Church)
Father's Name:   Charles Thorp

Parish books states Charles Snr was a Butcher.

How i trace Charles Thorp senior now? Can anyone point me in the right direction? None of the christenings of Charles Jnr or siblings state a mother's name to find a marriage.

Have you tried for a marriage for Charles Junior to see if the parent's names are on it also a death ?
There are three other baptism's Mary Thorp 30/6/1799 St Kirby York father Charles occupation butcher ...Dinah 17/4/1797 ....Jams ? would think James 5/8/1805 ...Again no mention of mothers name ...Can't see a marriage but maybe they were married else where ..

I haven't been fortunate enough to find a marriage for Charles Jnr. I know his wife is a Charlotte Wilmott from East Markham.

I would have to order his death certificate I think, but I'm not sure if would let me in on his mother's name. He died in mexborough in 1866.

I'm not a massive fan of spending £9.25 unless I really need to, it soon adds up. In 1866 when Charles died in Mexborough, his mother, if alive would be in her late 80s early 90s. I'm not sure if it would have any mention of her whatsoever. Would it?

Thorp burials in South Kirkby:

Charles 28 April 1819 aged 54
Mary (of Pontefract) 25 July 1840 aged 78

These are the only two, apart from one much later, in 1905.

Thorp Marriages at All Saints, South Kirkby

Rachel Sp. otp to John Falkinder  of Pontefract Gunner in the Royal Horse Artillery
 18 July 1818

Dinah Sp. otp to Edward Wilson B. otp
20 April 1820
Witnesses: Ann Thorp    John Tee   Richard Rodwell

Mary Sp. otp. to Thomas Hopkinson (of Pontefract) B.
22 January 1821
Witnesses: Edward Wilson   John Tee  Samuel Addingley

Jonathan B. otp to Frances Barnett Sp. otp
22 February 1824
Witnesses: William Garth[?]
                 Richard Holdsworth
                 Frances Baddeley

John and Rachel Falkender are in Tong, Yorkshire in 1841, along with a Charles Falkender aged 22.
A widowed John Falkinder Road surveyor and Artillery Pensioner is in Tong,  1851, along with a 27 year old niece named Mary Wilson, born in South Kirkby.
Rachel Falkinder, aged 51 was buried at Tong on August 6 1845.

Edward and Dinah Wilson baptised a daughter named Mary at All Saints, South Kirkby on 2 July 1821.  The date doesn't tally with Mary Wilson's age in 1851, and she is not with her parents in 1841, but nor was there a burial of a Mary Wilson in South Kirkby between 1821 and 1851.

There is no baptism of Rachel Thorp in South Kirkby. There is, however, a Rachael Thorp born  Friday 4 May 1794 and baptised at Badsworth on Monday 12 May 1794

The parish clerk at Badsworth was keeping beautifully detailed records at this time. Rachael's parents are:
Charles Thorp of Upton, labourer, son of Jonathan Thorp of Upton, blacksmith by Sarah, daughter of James Whitaker of Upton, farmer.
and
Mary daughter of Henry Houseman of Upton, Taylor by Mary daughter of John Tunningley of Heindley, Butcher

Well that's an awful lot of information in one go, thank you very much.

Thorp burials in South Kirkby:

Charles 28 April 1819 aged 54
Mary (of Pontefract) 25 July 1840 aged 78

So this could be my Charles Snr and his wife?

Rachel Sp. otp to John Falkinder  of Pontefract Gunner in the Royal Horse Artillery

So this additional sibling of Charles Jnr - Rachael - is what leads to all this information. I'd like to think the clerk knew people would be looking at this in years to come, because that's more detail than was needed.

I really need to go up there and have a look around the area.

Did Upton have its own Church at the time, as a lot of my family seem to originate from there in that information you sent me - or would they have gone to Badsworth. (I hope so for his records)
