Needle in a Haystack - looking for White and Bailey families
« on: Monday 29 September 14 23:28 BST (UK) »
The surnames of White and Bailey are so common, I'm hoping someone is searching the same families or else might have some ideas or information that will help my search.

William Bailey married Ann White in Tottenham in 1850. On the marriage register, William declares his father is John Bailey - Ann declares her father is William White. William Bailey was born about 1828 in Newington and Ann White was born about 1827 in Tottenham, Middlesex. The mothers name was not recorded for either.

William Bailey left England for Canada, never returning to England.

The family would appear to have lived in Middlesex for most of or even their entire lives.

I am trying to find the parents of both William Bailey and Ann White so that I can continue the journey!

Hi I can see the family in 1851 HO107/1578/8/9 and note an Ephraim b c 1848 who appears to be a child of Ann's prior to marriage, does he keep the name Bailey throughout or revert to White later as I cannot locate the family in 1861 or at present much on him?

I wonder if Newington might actually mean Stoke Newington

At West Hackney:

21 Oct 1827 William s of John & Mary Bailey, High St, W. Hackney, Labourer

Otherwise at Newington St Mary's on 6 Sep 1829 there's

Thomas William s of John & Elizabeth Bayly, Gibraltar Row, St George's, Gent, b 18 July 1829

Middlesex: KING,  MUMFORD, COOK, ROUSE, GOODALL, BROWN
Oxford: MATTHEWS, MOSS
Kent: SPOONER, THOMAS, KILLICK, COLLINS
Cambs: PRIGG, LEACH
Hants: FOSTER
Montgomery: BREES
Surrey: REEVE

Thank you all!
Yes -  Ephraim always went by the surname Bailey and never White - he may never have known otherwise and with the little bit of searching that I did do, I never found any other marriage for Ann White but I do believe that he was Ann's son and I found only one reference to an Ephraim White for the same year of birth.
The marriage record is indeed that of William Bailey and Ann White and as  you see, all I have to go on at that point is the fathers name.
Stevie - thank you for that find.
Indeed in going back through my own data, there was a record of the place of birth being Stoke Newington and so that looks to be him.
The Baileys of course emigrated to Canada and one of the sons married into the Whitefoot family who also emigrated from England close to the same time.
The more common the name, the harder the find! I'm hoping I can work backward now -

Hi again, just to suggest being a bit wary, on the 1851 I posted William was shown as born Newington, Surrey not  Stoke Newington which is in Middlesex  the other side of the Thames?
