Crossed out handwriting
« on: Tuesday 14 October 14 12:17 BST (UK) »
Hi

I've attached a copy from a baptism book for a distant cousin who I know was born before marriage.  She also had a Sister 2 years younger.  However, on this baptism record her Father's name has been included and then crossed out.  On her Sister's no Father is mentioned.

Her name is Florence Helen and she is the bottom entry on the page.

I was wondering if there is anyone who can work out what the Fathers name is.

Regards

Sue

That was my thought.  I'll have to see if I can tie that name in with the family somehow.

He was obviously a 'wrongun' for her to have his name crossed out and not include it on the next child.  Unless of course the next child wasn't his!!!!  :-\

There is something similar with one of mine.  Although they had been married for two months, the child was nine months old and baptised as ...
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

As Florence was born in Dec 1894 she was obviously conceived 2 years before the baptism in April 1896. Is it possible that Edith was living with or married to Henry Thornton by the later date but that he was not the child's father, hence the crossing out?

Hi mike

Edith married twice but husbands surnames were Day & Bayldon so I'm confident neither were Florence's father

As mentioned before Edith also had another daughter before her marriage to william day but this one had no father mentioned on the baptism.

Sounds like a bit of a girl to me. Lol

The mother is described as a Single Woman. Is that the "fathers" Occupation crossed out. Does that read Guardsman. Possibly a soldier. There is an Attestation Record for a Henry Thornton in 4th Bt East Surrey Rgt.
This post is a natural hand made product. The slight variations in spelling and grammar enhance its individual character and beauty and in no way are to be considered flaws. Unfortunately my preferred method of writing (Parker Quink on Basildon Bond) cannot be used.
